Early life

Prince Juan Carlos Enrique Alejandro of Escandria was born on 5 May 1810 at the Oritiva Palace in Astugón. His father, then Hereditary Prince of Escandria, Enrique, was the eldest son of King Carlos III of Escandria. His mother, Hereditary Princess María (born Countess Marie von Lilienthal-Faulstich), was from an Austro-Hungarian noble family.

Marriage and children

On 24 May 1839, Hereditary Prince Juan Carlos married Doña María Claudia de Mallén Contador, a Spanish noblewoman from southern Spain. Together, they had five children:

  • Enrique, Hereditary Prince of Escandria (Enrique Juan Carlos Claudio; 1840-1918), married to María Patricia de Esquível, had issue.
  • Sofía, Princess Royal of Escandria (Sofía María Claudia Luisa; 1841-1910), married to Comte Louis de Lafontaine, had issue.
