Krumlau is home to two major ethnic groups, a Hesurian community, which comprises of 41% of the population, and a Pomric Wenish community, which form the majority of the populace with 47% of Krumlau identifying as Wenish. Additionally, certain regions of Krumlau are inhabited by Kuns, consisting of 6% of the population. Despite lacking majority, the Hesurian language is considered the Lingua Franca in the nation, although both the Standard Hesurian dialect and Wenish are taught at schools. The two free cities, Rakonitz and Vladika, are officially billingual, although Hesurian is the dominant language in the Capital, while in Vladika Wenish is dominant.

The Krumlavian state's formation begins in the 10th century, with the creation of the Order of the Haemator Knights of the Cathartic Temple, an order mainly composed of Hesurian followers of Ditanery with the goal of converting the Pomric peoples south of Erdara. Sponsored by the Ragucin Empire, the order, together with Hesurian local nobles, made significant gains in conquering northern Winyan pagan area. The Krumgemeinschaft was established in 1039, amongst leading figures of the Haemator Knights and the Dukes of what is now Krumlau. Several of the conquered lands were also granted to the Haemator Order, who undertook significant conversion efforts of the local Pomric folk. The recently created duchies and margraviates grew in influence and size, receiving major imperial support during invasions from eastern hordes. As the Ragucin Empire splintered in the late 15th century, the members of the Krumgemeinschaft banded in a loose confederation, centered in Rakonitz. In the 19th century the unstable order of this confederation reached its peak in the Krumlavian Revolution, which would eventually cause the undertaking of significant reforms and a new constitution which would be the foundation of Krumlau's modern state. The nation grew as an industrial powerhouse and has since then emerged in Erdaran affairs.

The nation grew as an industrial powerhouse and has since then emerged in Erdaran affairs.

The aftermath of the Revolution was defined by increasing animosity between the Hesurian and Wenish peoples, with significant separatist movements present during the second half of the 19th century. The economic differences between the industrializing, Hesurian north of the nation and the more rural Wenish south created a sour political environment, which shaped the political organization of the country to this day. It was only during the Continental War and posteriorly at the Vishnevsk War that a true shared Krumlavian identity was created. Despite this, separatism and regionalist politics have remained, albeit at a weaker state.

Krumlau is one of the founding states of the Erdaran Union and the Assembly of Nations, partaking in various multilateral efforts particularly when it comes to the further economic and political integration of Erdara. It sponsors active cooperation policies with neighbour nations such as Dulebia and certain cardian nations like Finium with distinct pragmatism, having seen significant improvement on foreign relations and economic interaction with the former and an active stance on improving transparency and democracy in the latter through non interventionist means.

The region of the Kurom valley in southern Krumlau had historically been inhabited by Winyans since the 5th century in the very least, with them having migrated from the south across the TBD mountains. Various settlements were created along the Matka river, heart of the occupation and demographic of the early Winyans. Kurom was never a unified political entity, rather being a group of various tribes who shared a common identity, yet often had internal strife and power disputes. The Winyans expanded beyond the Kurom valley in the 7th century, settling much of the sparsely populated southern erdaran plain. Much like its other pomric counterparts at the time, Winyans lacked an organized religion, adhering to animistic practices transmitted through oral tradition. Winyan tribes to the north of the Kurom valley had regular contact with Hesurian peoples, often conducting trade and raids throughout the massive basin of the Adel river.

By the late 10th century, Hesurian nobles to the north, mainly established in the Duchies of Adelnau, Kameland and Aitau, as well as the Margraviarate of Wollstein, banded together with the cathartic military order of the Haemator Knights in a coordinated expansion initiative to ensure not only the conversion of the Winyan peoples south of the erdaran plain, but also their conquest. The Winyans, known to Hesurians as Wens, were in a weakened state, with many settlements forced to pay tribute to the eastern kuns, who had at the time been unified under the banner of Khagan Yesugei the Great. The fragmented northern wenish polities were quickly conquered by the Hesurians, who established new duchies and founded new cities along the Adel river. While control of the region was solidly established, this first crusade failed to convert the local peoples.

The formation of the Ragucin Kingdom and its incorporation of both the Haemator Knights and the Hesurian duchies into it cemented a second wave of expansion shortly after. Autonomous under King Dilisme and bolstered by increased financial support of the Piloro, the second crusade achieved immense military success, conquering the entirety of the Adel basin and much of the southern erdaran plain, reaching the Kurom valley by 1011. Centered in Vladika, the remaining independent Winyans banded together under King Svetovid I, who with the help of cuman mercenaries, whom he allowed settlement inside the Kurom valley, gathered a formidable army.

The Battle of Drenzig in 1018 was a decisive victory for King Svetovid, succesfully establishing the end of the second crusade. Svetovid's death in 1033 and the succession of his eldest son Yaropolk marked a distinct downturn in the stability of the Kurom valley, with Yaropolk's brother, Svetopolk, taking up arms in order to gather power. The Ragucin empire, exploiting this disunity, offered Svetopolk support in his claim if the converted and swore fealty to the Ragucin Emperor. While this offer was initially rejected, as Svetopolk's claim to the throne waned he agreed to the terms and, in 1037 his army was bolstered by hesurian retinues and the now feared Haemator knights. In Wulkow, Yaropolk's forces suffered a crippling defeat, which allowed Ragucin forces to move into the Kurom valley. Shortly after, Yaropolk was captured and the Winyan kingdom was conquered, with Svetopolk being given the title of Margrave of Wenya.

The region of what is now Krumlau was never centralized under a single vassal of the Ragucin Empire. Instead, its many recently founded duchies and margraviates were given significant autonomy and home rule privileges, with many villages along the Adel and Matka granted imperial city rights to stimulate the migration of Hesurians south. To guarantee their mutual autonomy and cooperate on military affairs within the Ragucin Empire, the Order of the Haemator Knights, together with the Duchies of Adelnau, Aitau, Brunnen, Kameland, Waagland, Walden, Wolvege, the archbishopric of Saale and the margraviates of Helmark, Wollstein and Wenya, banded together in the Krumgemeinschaft, a fellowship of feudatories who would mutually support each other in the conversion of the local peoples, as well as support one another against foreign raids and incursions.

The Monarchy in Krumlau is considered by the constitution a moderating political figure, and thus focused in affairs of state and mediating the balance between the country's legislative, executive and judiciary. The Monarch is bound to uphold constitutional rights of the country's citizens and be a neutral figure between governments. Krumlau is an elective monarchy, with special elections taking place at the times of a monarch's death. Registered voters of each constituent state or free city will vote for three electors from their state's nobility to represent their constituency in the Reichstag, with the exception of Free Cities, where any citizen of age may be a candidate. The term of an elector lasts until the death or deposition of the monarch, which the Reichstag may do with a qualified majority. The Reichstag meets yearly during a monarch's reign, to discuss and counsel the reigning monarch in affairs of state. In these yearly sessions the Reichstag may enact a motion of no confidence, and with a two thirds majority depose the ruler.

Other than particular monarch related affairs, the federal legislation is responsibility of the Bundesrat. The Bundesrat represents each of the constituent states and free cities, with their ammount of seats proportional to the population. Deputies are elected for 4 year terms, with elections for deputies within each state being specified by their associated state or free city's constitution. Most states are elected by proportional representation. The Bundesrat has the power to dismiss the government, and thus the majority in the Bundesrat determines the choice of Chancellor. In modern times, the Social Democratic Party of Krumlau, the Liberal Democratic Party and the regionalist Krumlavian National Party and Krumlavian Agrarian Movement have been the major parties, with more recently the Green Party having achieved significant victories in major constituencies.

Krumlau has a social capitalist economy, being one of the leading industrialized countries in Gaia. It is ranked the second largest economy by GDP and is the largest economy in the Erdaran Common Market. The country has significant social programs and government participation in the energy, infrastructure, telecommunications and the airspace sectors. Private enterprise is extensive, with the nation being amongst the freest to do business with in Gaia. It has a low unemployment rate of 5.1% and enjoys high labour productivity. Krumlau's economy has significant regional differences. While the northern Hesurian area is a highly dynamic service oriented economy, the Wenish area, especially in the east, is lagging behind. The service sector accounts for 69.8% of Krumlau's GDP, with industry at 28.5% and agriculture at 1.7%.
As part of the Erdaran Common Market, Krumlau enjoys significant integration with its neighbours, being a net exporter of many goods all over Erdara. Krumlau has a highly advanced automotive industry, being one of the most competitive suppliers of automobiles worldwide. The pharmaceutical and electronic sectors also hold major importance and global outreach, as well as its highly developed airspace sector. It is considered one of the most innovative economies in Gaia. The top exports of Krumlau are vehicles, machinery, electronic products, chemical goods, pharmaceuticals, plastics, food products, base metals and rare earths.
Regional economic differences in Krumlau have always been historically present. The north was first to industrialize, growing rapidly with a significant textile industry in its base. The Kurom valley, centered in Vladika, took some decades before it truly began industrializing, with the eastern areas remaining mostly agrarian. The region saw significant shifts in the 1950s, with steel industry largely being outsourced abroad and causing significant economic shifts in the south, rich in iron and coal. Unemployment rates in the south were severely higher than in the north in the 70s and 80s, which caused a strengthening in regionalist policies. Through large federal subsidies towards the south, the economic situation has improved considerably especially in the Kurom valley, yet Arkona and Kurgan remain behind in economic development.
Krumlau has historically been Erdara's largest supplier of agricultural produce. The extensive fertile lands and irrigated plains and valleys, combined with modern technology and mechanization make Krumlau a leading figure in the agricultural market. Regional agricultural trade is regulated and safeguarded by the Erdaran Agricultural Comission, which Krumlau hosts in the city of Rühen. Notable exports are dairy, beef, pork, rye and wheat. Krumlau is famous worldwide for its many beers, as well as its extensive variety of cheese. Overall, agriculture is a relevant sector in the economy, employing circa 3.8% of the population and with the agricultural and food processing industry combined accounting for 5.1% of the GDP.

Krumlau is the largest consumer of energy in Erdara, being the second largest producer. Consumption of electricity in 2018 was 290.1 Twh per year. The nation is a major importer of natural gas, importing it mainly from its neighbour Dulebia and historically from Rotsir. A majority of its energy generation comes from Hydroelectricity and Nuclear_power sources, with 36% of Krumlau's electricity produced by hydro sources, 27% by nuclear, 19% by gas, 11% by coal, 4% by wind and 3% by solar, biofuel and wastes. The largest single power plant in Krumlau is the Kuznetsovskaya Dam, with an annual generation of 43.5 TWh, 14.9% of the total energy consumption in Krumlau.
Natural gas is also used significantly for heating, with gas consumption import being more than three times the gas imports used for electricity generation. The majority of Krumlau's gas comes from Novatek Naftogaz, Dulebia's state owned company, with 62% of the total gas utilized in Krumlau coming from them. Krumlau is currently aiming to reduce gas consumption, particularly in electricity generation, in favour of more renewable and locally available sources of energy. Nuclear power has been the current focus of expansion, due to the environmental damages caused by the construction of new dams. The region of Kameland has small gas resources, whose total production accounts for 11% of Krumlau's gas consumption.
Transport in Krumlau relies on several main modes, with an extensive waterway and railway network. Additionally, Krumlau counts with a highly developed highway system, and major airports in Erdara. Air travel is used for greater distance, although facing competition from the state-owned Reichsbahn, Krumlau's national railway company. High speed trains connect major urban centers, with speeds as high as 505km/h in the recently opened HGW Magnetzug line which links Rakonitz to Vladika. Highways in Krumlau are notable for having no speed limit in several sectors. Many cities have rapid transit systems, with subways in several major settlements and tramways being a very common sight in all of Krumlau. Overall, Krumlau has 29,892km of railway and 618,297km of highways.
Krumlau's biggest airport is Krajisnik International Airport, a major hub in Erdara which is located in the vicinity of Rakonitz. It has one of the largest rosters of destinations in Gaia, as well as being home of Krumlau's national airline, RLG Reichsluftfahrtgesellschaft, one of the largest airlines in Gaia. The second largest airport is Vladika-Myakulov International, another major airport.
Waterways in Krumlau are a major network for cargo transport, due to the extensive navigability of both the Adel and Matka basins. A canal exists between rivers Dravinya and Narau, effectively linking both river basins and integrating the waterway network throughout most of Krumlau. The waterways of Krumlau are amongst the busiest in the world. Ludwigshafen in Rakonitz is the largest inland harbour in Gaia, serving as a hub for cargo distribution inland in south Erdara.

The Federation of Krumlau, also known as Krumlov, is a country in southern Erdara bordered by Mascylla, Lilienburg and Hytekia in the north, Finstria to the east and Dulebia to the southwest. Krumlau is a landlocked country covering an area of 1,004,344 square kilometers, making it the largest nation in Erdara. It is a federal parliamentary monarchy consisting of 15 highly autonomous constituent states and three free cities. The organization of the nation is complex and structured on regional and linguistic grounds, given the country's bilingual nature. It's largest city and capital is Rakonitz, with 2.5 million residents. Other major cities include Vladika, Nordgau, Ihlenburg, Rühen, Kandau and Waasenfurt. Krumlau is both the largest and most populous state in Erdara, as well as being one of the least densely inhabited.

Krumlau is home to two major ethnic groups, a Hesurian community, which forms the majority of the nation, and a Pomric Wenish community, which is a significant group with 40% of the population of Krumlau identifying as Wenish. Additionally, certain regions of Krumlau are inhabited by Kuns, consisting of 3.7% of the population. The Hesurian language is considered the Lingua Franca in the nation, although both the Standard Hesurian dialect and Wenish are taught at schools. The free cities of Rakonitz and Vladika are officially bilingual, although Hesurian is the dominant language in the Capital, while in Vladika Wenish is dominant.

As the Ragucin Empire splintered in the early 15th century, the members of the Krumgemeinschaft banded in a loose confederation, centered in Rakonitz.

It sponsors active cooperation policies with neighbour nations such as Dulebia and certain Cardish nations like Finium with distinct pragmatism, having seen significant improvement on foreign relations and economic interaction with the former and an active stance on improving transparency and democracy in the latter through non interventionist means.

Krumlau is a highly developed nation, with an advanced high-income economy. It has very high standards of living, quality of life, education and healthcare, yet regional disparities in development are still noticeable.

History

Early History

By the late 13th century, Hesurian nobles to the north, mainly established in the Duchies of Adelnau, Kameland and Aitau, as well as the Margraviarate of Wollstein, banded together with the cathartic military order of the Haemator Knights in a coordinated expansion initiative to ensure not only the conversion of the Winyan peoples south of the erdaran plain, but also their conquest.

Autonomous under King Dilisme and bolstered by increased financial support of the Piloro, the second crusade achieved immense military success, conquering the entirety of the Adel basin and much of the southern erdaran plain, reaching the Kurom valley by 1311. Centered in Vladika, the remaining independent Winyans banded together under King Svetovid I, who with the help of cuman mercenaries, whom he allowed settlement inside the Kurom valley, gathered a formidable army.

The Battle of Drenzig in 1318 was a decisive victory for King Svetovid, succesfully establishing the end of the second crusade. Svetovid's death in 1333 and the succession of his eldest son Yaropolk marked a distinct downturn in the stability of the Kurom valley, with Yaropolk's brother, Svetopolk, taking up arms in order to gather power. The Ragucin empire, exploiting this disunity, offered Svetopolk support in his claim if the converted and swore fealty to the Ragucin Emperor. While this offer was initially rejected, as Svetopolk's claim to the throne waned he agreed to the terms and, in 1337 his army was bolstered by hesurian retinues and the now feared Haemator knights.

Archduchess Louise I of Krumlau
Chancellor Natalia Wojtek

The Federation of Krumlau is a Federal parliamentary state under a constitutional monarchy. The monarch is Head of State and commander in chief of the armed forces, still holding some executive power. The position of Chancellor, Krumlau's head of government, belongs to the elected politician most likely to command a Coalition in parliament. The Chancellor chooses ministers which are formally appointed and taken from office by the monarch. While seldom used, the monarch may make use of these powers to remove a Minister from office, an event done only after major political scandals. The Monarch is also responsible for calling federal elections.

The Bundesrat represents each of the constituent states and free cities, with their amount of seats proportional to the population.

Economy

Ihlenburg is Krumlau's leading financial hub and seat of the Central Bank
