Liga Premiére, originally known as Liga 1 is a Midrasian professional league for men's association football clubs. The league is Midrasia's primary domestic football competition, located at the top of the football league system. The league hosts 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the bottom three teams each season being relegated to Liga 2. Formed in 1905 as a union of all of Midrasia's regional footballing championships, Liga Premiére is one of the oldest and most prestigious football leagues in Aeia.
A large number of teams have competed and won the league throughout its long history, however in recent years, the league has mostly been dominated by a small sect of top-tier clubs, particularly Olympique de Lotrique and FC Almiaro who are seen as the 'grandees' of modern Midrasian football.
According to the FFA's league coefficient, Liga Premiére has dominated domestic Aeian footballing leagues, though the league faces considerable competition coming from the Navish Superliga. Team's from Liga Premiére have a history of dominating international footballing tournaments and player of the year awards. Most recently, both Olympique de Lotrique and FC Almiaro have won the FFA Champions Cup, making Midrasia the only nation to have two domestic teams win the tournament.
Today Liga Premiére remains one of the most popular and profitable domestic footballing leagues in Aeia, with high levels of average attendance and fans of the league and its teams coming from all over Aeia. In mid-2018 it was announced that the Midrasian Football Federation announced it would be restructuring and rebranding the existing Liga 1 into the Liga Premiére, in a move that was driven by a desire to attract more overseas viewers, as well as reforming the league's financial structure to allow for a more balanced share of TV revenue. In light of the rebrand it was annonced that bidding prices for the broadcasting rights for the 19/20 season had increased significantly, allegedly surpassing Đ3.5 billion.
Format
The competition format follows the usual double round-robin format. During the course of a season, which lasts from August to May, each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matchdays. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, with the highest-ranked club at the end of the season crowned champion.
Promotion and relegation
A system of promotion and relegation exists across the entirety of the Midrasian Football Federation. The three lowest placed teams in Liga Premiére are relegated to the Liga 2, and the top two teams from the Liga 2 promoted to Liga Premiére, with an additional club promoted after a series of play-offs involving the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs. The lowest ranked clubs from Liga 2 are relegated to Liga 3 the bottom tier of Midrasian professional football. Any teams relegated from Liga 3 are regarded as non-league teams and can only play in the amateur Midrasian and regional footballing ladder.
Ranking of clubs on equal points
If points are equal between two or more clubs, the rules are:
- If all clubs involved have played each other twice:
- If the tie is between two clubs, then the tie is broken using the goal difference for the two matches those clubs have played against each other (without away goals rule)
- If the tie is between more than two clubs, then the tie is broken using the games the clubs have played against each other:
- a) head-to-head points
- b) head-to-head goal difference
- c) head-to-head goals scored
- If two legged games between all clubs involved have not been played, or the tie is not broken by the rules above, it is broken using:
- a) total goal difference
- b) total goals scored
- If the tie is still not broken, the winner will be determined by Fair Play scales. These are:
- yellow card, 1 point
- doubled yellow card/ejection, 2 points
- direct red card, 3 points
- suspension or disqualification of coach, executive or other club personnel (outside referees' decisions), 5 points
- misconduct of the supporters: mild 5 points, serious 6 points, very serious 7 points
- stadium closure, 10 points
- if the Competition Committee removes a penalty, the points are also removed
- If the tie is still not broken, it will be resolved with a tie-break match in a neutral stadium.
Qualifying for international competitions
The top teams in the league qualify for the FFA Champions Cup. Based on Liga Premiére's league coefficient, Midrasia is able to send a total of 3 teams to the competition. The first, second and third placed teams within the league gain qualification for the tournament.
Teams
A total of 20 teams contest the league in its current season, including 17 sides from the 2018-19 season and three promoted from Liga 2. These are two clubs promoted directly from that division (FC Pelosiens and Skaer Thiaric), and the winner of the Liga 2 play-offs, Laterna Cardinaux.
