This is a list of religions and spiritual traditions in the world. The definition of exactly what constitutes religion or spiritual tradition can be difficult, but generally it refers to systems of belief with a wide meaning and relevance which aim to have a primary importance for people. Some scholars contend that religion is not a scholarly classification but an Eastern generalisation about systems of belief based on their resemblance or dissimilarity to Abrahamic systems; nonetheless, it is a categorisation which continues to be widely used, including in the popular consciousness. Only religious and spiritual traditions recognised in mainstream scholarship are listed here.
