The Occupation of Glytter, codenamed Operation Trident, was initially a joint military operation undertaken by the Kingdom of Estmere and Werania conducted by the nations' respective marines and navies during the Great War. The invasion began in the early morning of 10 March 1927 with Estmerish and Weranian troops disembarking in Spálgleann, capital of neutral Glytter. The troops were met with no resistance and quickly began to establish control over the islands, while also arresting Gaullican citizens. The intent was to secure Glytter was a base of operations for the Grand Alliance, offering advantageous ports near Norday and the northern Vehemens ocean, allowing it to maintain naval dominance in strategic locations. While Glytteronian neutrality was violated, there was no complaint issued by the Glytteronian government under Taoiseach Éamon Ua Buachalla as the government was actively collaborating with the joint Estmerish-Weranian High Command.

With the worsening state of the Great War for the Grand Alliance and Gaullican advances into Estmere, Esterish military assets were required to focus solely on the war effort on the Continent. In early summer of 1928 it was decided that Estmere would transfer its portion of the occupation to the Federation of Asteria. Glytter's strategic ports and vast supply of iron was deemed to valuable to fall into the hands of the Gaullican-led Entente and the Federation agreed to jointly occupy the country despite its own policy of neutrality. The Glytteronian public was largely outraged, as the Estmerish withdrawal undermined the legitimacy of the occupation. Public opinion turned against the Ua Buachalla government and the occupying forces. Following the Snarksburgh Massacre, in which a crowd of civilian protesters had gathered around a Federation military checkpoint and were subsequently fired upon, public outcry turned into active resistance. The result was the outbreak of the Quasi-War, in which resistance groups of all types began fighting both the Glytteronian government and the Federation's forces. The Battle of Glytter, a Gaullican attack on the Federation's fleet stationed at the Caipitilbonn naval base, caused the situation to deteriorate further. While over 4,000 Asterians were killed and the majority of the Federation's fleet was destroyed, there were over 500 civilian casualties, most of which were Glytteronians. As a result conflict continued to escalate and marshal law was eventually declared by the Federation, undermining the Glytteronian government and further enraging the populace.

The initial invasion force consisted of 800 Estmerish Marines and 500 Weranian Marines, who were initially relieved by a force of 10,000 soldiers from the Esmterish Home Guard and 10,000 from the Weranian Reserve Force. Over time an additional 20,000 Estmerish soldiers and an additional 15,000 Weranian soldiers would be stationed in Glytter. Once the occupation was transferred to the Federation, the Federation sent a total of 11,000 Marines and 40,000 soldiers. Likewise, the Federation's Vehemens Fleet was moved to Caipitilbonn in the Glytteronian capital which was eventually virtually destroyed following the Gaullican surprise attack. The occupation formally ended on 12 February 1935 following the capitulation of the Entente. While the occupation came to an end, it has had a long lasting effect on relations between the Federation and Glytter, which Taoiseach Enda Kelley described as "usually overwhelmingly below average" in 2006. Relations with Weranian were severely damaged, but began to improve during the 1950s as Glytter began the process of accession to the Euclean Community.

Background

  • Glytter industrialises, development of party system. Political divisions regarding pre-war alliance system but continues to exports iron to all major powers as neutrality favoured.
  • Start of GW, Taoiseach proclaims neutrality. Both Gaullica and Estmere attempt for Glytter to enter alliance in order to get sole access to iron reserves.
  • Estmerish efforts to persuade Glytter fail, start planning with Werania an occupation to secure iron reserves (in case their colonies go down) and ports (to deny some power projection from Gaullica).
