The president of the Quetanan Republic is the executive head of state of Quetana. The powers, functions and duties of prior presidential offices, and their relation with the prime minister and cabinets have over time differed with the various Quetanan constitutions. The president serves a five-year term and can be reelected. The current president is Emília Medeiros, who won the 2021 Quetana general election and succeeded António Brafeo, who had been in office for an extended term since 14 January 2016.

Powers

The president is the nominal commander-in-chief of the Quetanan Armed Forces and occupies the first place in the country's order of precedence. The presidency is vested with considerable powers on paper, and is the active chief executive of the nation's politics. However, in legislative practice presidents are a largely ceremonial role; the Prime Minister of Quetana is the active legislative executive of the government. The President leads the Cabinet (the Executive) and, in addition, the President tends to lead a major political party and generally commands a majority in the National Assembly.

Election

According to Article 32 the Constitution, the president is elected for a five-year term by the Parliament in a special session at least a month before the incumbent's term expires. Typically, political parties vote for their leader in accordance with the seats won in the national election. The most recent election was the 2021 Quetana general election, in which Emília Medeiros and the Socialist Party were elected.

Oath of Office

Before taking office, the president must recite an oath in front of the Parliament according to the Article 33, paragraph 2 of the Constitution:

"I swear in the name of the Holy, Consubstantial and Indivisible Trinity to safeguard the Constitution and the laws, to ensure their faithful observance, to defend the national independence and territorial integrity of the Country, to protect the rights and liberties of the Quetanan people and to serve the general interest and the progress of the Qoati People."

Security and transport

The personal protection of the President and former Presidents is the responsibility of Protection Command within the National Police Service. The fleet of Presidential Cars provide the President with a number of security features, as well as transport, and are driven by officers from this unit. Air transport for the President is provided by a variety of military and civilian operators.
