Athanasios (Athanasios Theodoros Michail; born 15 September 1998) is a member of the Lihnidosi imperial family. He is the first child of Prince Adrian of Lihnidos and Hélène de Condé and a nephew of Empress Stella II. At the time of his birth he was considered sixth in the line of succession to the Lihnidosi throne and is now ninth. While named Athanasios, he often goes by and is addressed as Athan by friends and family.

Athanasios was born at UMMC Capstone Palarta in Palarta, Lihnidos on 15 September 1998. After reaching the appropriate age Athanasios was enrolled in Kataea School for primary education and later moved to Vathurion Academy for secondary education. Following his graduation from Vathurion in 2016 he went on to attend the Imperial University of Lyncanestria where he entered the biology program and is studying for a degree in biological sciences with a concentration in zoology.

Early Life and Education

Birth and controversy

Athanasios was born on 15 September 1998 at 2:27 PM. He was born at UMMC Capstone Palarta, a University of Messenia Medical Center run by Capstone Health. He was born to Prince Adrian of Lihnidos and his wife Hélène de Condé. Athanasios's parents had been sent to Palarta by his grandmother Empress Teresa following the announcement of Hélène's pregnancy by the Imperial Palace on 11 March 1998. Hélène, who had become pregnant at the age of 20, was not married to Prince Adrian at the time the pregnancy was announced. Prince Adrian was 18 at the time. The couple later were married on 28 March 1998 during a small ceremony held in the chapel of Sozantina Palace in Messenia. Years later it was revealed that the Imperial Palace had attempted to keep the pregnancy a secret from the press, but was forced to make an announcement after a Lihnidosi tabloid had prepared a front-page story that was set to be run the next day on 12 March. Emmanouil Stratis, who served as a General-Secretary of the Imperial Household under Empress Teresa, later wrote in a book titled A Turbulent Undertaking: My Time As General-Secretary that the empress had sent Adrian and Hélène to Palarta because she saw the pregnancy as an embarrassment to the imperial family and wanted Hélène to be isolated from the media. Having been published in 2002, years after the death of Empress Teresa, the Imperial Palace denied the allegations made in the book and cited Stratis's contentious departure as general-secretary as a reason his credibility should be questioned. Stratis was later accused of violating a non-disclosure agreement he had signed when becoming general-secretary due to several pieces of information included in his book.

Athanasios was christened Athanasios Theodoros Michail on 18 October 1998 during a ceremony in the chapel of Sozantina Palace, the same chapel that his parents had been married in. The ceremony was a private event. The only family members present from his father's side of the family were his grandparents, three aunts, and two uncles, with his grandmother, uncle, and great uncle present from his mother's side. His Godfather was his mother's uncle Louis Joseph, Viscount of Rhé and his Godmother was Adrian's sister Stella. He was named Athanasios after his great-great grandfather Athanasios II, the last reigning Emperor of Lihnidos.

Education

Athanasios began his education at the nursery and pre-preparatory Kataea School. Kataea, located in the northern Arcadia borough of Acale, was the same primary school that both his father and uncle attended during their youth. At the age of thirteen he began at Vathurion Academy in Eleira, a small town outside the capital. Athanasios was the third member of the imperial family to attend the academy, with his great aunt Alexandra having attended for two years and his cousin Tiara beginning the same year as him. During his time at Vathurion Athanasios was an active student. He was a player on the academy's football team for his first year, however quit the team in order to join the field hockey team, which he participated in for the remaining duration of his time at the academy. During his last year at the academy he was chosen as the team's captain. Athanasios graduated from the academy in 2016.

The prince took a gap year from 2016 to 2017, during which he traveled in Latium and Lyncanestria. During this time he visited a number of universities in both countries. Due to his mother's connection to Lyncanestria, it was expected that, if he were to attend a foreign university, it would be one in Lyncanestria. It was announced during the spring of 2017 that Athanasios would be attending the Imperial University of Lyncanestria in Villeneuve for his undergraduate studies. He began at the university in September. According to family representatives the prince would be studying for a degree in biological sciences with a concentration in zoology. During his time at the university he has joined the university's small field hockey team and is active in some student clubs. He is expected to graduate from the university in 2021. During an interview with Emilia Chontou from the Arcadia Daily in October 2018 Athanasios expressed interest in attending veterinary school after obtaining his degree.

Personal Life

Athanasios participates in several sports both in competitive and casual settings. He plays a forward on his university field hockey team at the Imperial University of Lyncanestria and had previously played a forward for Vathurion Academy during secondary school. He will occasionally participate in games of football with friends and has been seen as football games in Lyncanestria supporting AS Fleury. He is known to also ski and snowboard when on vacation with his family to mountain resorts in Lyncanestria.

Athanasios does painting and photography as a hobby and is a member of both photography and art clubs at university. He primarily does nature photography and painting, having said that "[he] started gaining an appreciation for the beauty of nature when [his] father took [him] flying," which he has said he also enjoys. His father, Prince Adrian, was a first lieutenant in the Lihnidosi Air Force and owns an Arthuristan-made Bombard Duchess, a light, twin-engine propeller aircraft. His father would often take him flying during his time home from Vathurion, however the two have stopped the activity since Athanasios entered university.

Like most of his immediate and extended family, Athanasios is a Fabrian Catholic. During his youth his family would attend weekly mass on Sundays and he continues to do so while at university in Lyncanestria.
