The Republic of Urat , commonly known as Urat, is a federal republic composed of 7 districts, and a capital district divided into precincts. It occupies much of the island of St Gall and directly borders the Vionna-Frankenlischian colonial state of Saint Gall Colony which it claims as soveriegn territory. Urat has a population of 7.3 million inhabitants and is currently led by Katherine Thorne since her 2014 election victory.

While the country itself has its roots in Frankenlischian colonisation, the earliest recorded human presence in the area can be found around 14,000 years ago when emigrants from Magna Terrifica came to the island before the Tidal Rise of 11,000 BC which separated the continent, making the new Terrifican mainland much smaller and leaving the island of St Gall at 24,090 square kilometers. The island was colonised by Frankenlischian settlers in the 17th century AD and Urat separated from Saint Gall Colony at the turn of the 19th century and incorporated local natives, foreign settlers, pirates and Frankenlischian colonists. Since then there has been several small civil wars and wars with other island nations nearby culminating in the reorganisation of the Repulic of Urat as a Federal Republic with multiple districts in 1911 following the URatic-Aflan War from October 1909 to May 1911.

The nation has been fairly stable to this day.

Name and etymology

The name Urat is first found on a Vionna-Frankenlischian map from 1815 and was persumably the original name for the nation. The word Urat has no actual meaning in the Common Language and there is no defined origin for the name although it is possibly derived from an Old Frankenlischian word, Orat, meaning 'free'.

History

Pre-Colonial Era

The earliest traces of human life in the area now the island of Saint Gall are dated from the late Paleolithic period. Until the period of Europan colonization, Saint Gall was relatively sparsely populated by a small number of similar cultures and tribes, which can be divided into three main groups. The first group are the Massai tribal group, such as the Massai themselves and the Yhan in the south of the island. The second group are advanced hunters and food gatherers which include the Ueche, Qudi and Serano tribes in the east of the island. The final group are farmers with pottery and a basic democratic system, mainly the Charrúneí Confederacy in the north.

Archaeological evidence exists to suggest that these cultures lived in relatives peace and only fought several small yet bloody conflicts, the largest being known simply as the War of the Four Tribes fought between the Charrúneí Confederacy of tribes, the Qudi and Serano tribes and the Massai tribe.

Colonialism

The island of Saint Gall was first discovered in 1619 by Frankenlischian explorer Sir Thomas Middlestone who described it as "A craggy little haven suitable for the production of crops but nothing further." The first colony was constructed in mid-1630 by Edward Radcliffe, the island's first governor. A charter was established to decide the boundaries of Colonial control as the native population was 220,000 at the time and too large even for the technologically superior colonists to defeat.

Governor Radcliffe established good relations with the Massai tribe and considered an alliance with the Charrúneí Confederacy, this was decided against as the democratic nature of the Confederacy could have incited republicanism or liberalism amongst the colonists. A short war between the Massai and Qudi tribes was finished at the Battle of Ranake where Frankenlischian colonists along with Massai warriors siezed control of the Qudi's largest settlement.

Over the next century the colony, named Saint Gall after the Frankenlischian Patron Saint of Wind, flourished and had a population of 19,000 by 1735. This was roughly the time that Urat first appeared as a concept. A fleet of pirates and raiders established a free port on the other side of the island to Saint Gall Colony, named Uratica, a variation on the Old Frankenlischian word for freedom.
