Vultesia, officially the Vultesian Principate, is a sovereign nation located in South Eastern Astariax. The majority of the state’s territory is naturally defined by the Vultesian plateau, located between the Talsar Sea in the West, the Delamere Mountains to the South, the straits of the Idoneth to the South East and the Paisi Ocean to the East. The Principate borders Arollia, Taknia, the Valcourian Empire, and Wellsenfaile. Vultesia’s estimated population of around 98 million citizens; amongst the most populous nations in Astariax. The Principate’s capital, and also its largest city, is the coastal metropolis of Saltstil, with its own population estimated at approximately five and a half million residents.

The Vultesian plateau has historically been the home of ethnic Proto-Vultesian hunter gatherers and later Proto-Vultesian Agriculturalists (PVAs) and the since at least the late neolithic, and through the introduction of ethnically distinct West Plateau plains pastoralists, commonly referred to as the Woolen Culture, centuries later and the arrival and intermingling of Talsarine settlers in the bronze age,it is estimated the modern Vultesian ethnic makeup was largely solidified by the turn of the millennium. The Vultesian Plateau and its bordering regions and islands have played host to numerous distinct civilisations, including the aforementioned Woolen Culture and Proto-Vultesian Agriculturalists (PVAs), the classical Empire of Vultes, the petty medieval principalities of the Delamere mountain clans, the Talasarine merchant states, the pagan and later Christian kingdoms of the plateau such as Oswesraen and the Vodtsmaran Crown Confederation, and more recently first united Vultesian state and later empire.

The Vultesian Empire, the largest contiguous empire in the Eastern hemisphere, was considered one of the ‘Great Empires’ of the Age of Sail, and was one of the dominant political units of Anteria from the 18th to early 20th centuries, conquering, vacillating or otherwise bringing into its sphere of influences the states that make up modern Wellenfaile, Scryeland, Thodalacia, Xzavaria, and areas of Rohyn. The Vultesian Empire's contemporary rival in the balance of power, was the maritime Riamese Empire, and the two power blocs wrestled for territory and influence into the 20th Century and throughout the Great war.

Despite its nominally victorious status in the worldwide conflict, depopulation, damages and massive post-war societal upheaval compounded the issues facing an already fractious Vultesia, such as the loss of vast swathes of formerly imperial holdings to independence movements both peaceful and military, crippling debts, and recurring pandemics. The Green Jacket Revolution, as the Vultesian Civil War has become known in common parlance broke out in 1918 following the assassaintion of King Leotpram II , and lasted for three years, until October 1921, when the eponymous Green Jackets, a far-right coalition under the singularist Marcusz Mattiasitt established the Vultesian Principate, the authoritarian, single party state that remains in power today.

Since the establishment of the Vultesian Principate, the nation has been ruled by a series of dictatorial Princeps, also referred to as First Citizens, who, alongside their party and state authorities have often been accused of both contemporary and historical corruption, breaches of civil liberties, repression, human rights violations, miscarriges of justice and state sanctioned discrimination, as well as historical crimes against humanity throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. Despite a history of condemnation however, the Principate has managed to become a key, if not controversial, player on the world stage, even gaining a certain amount of praise from the international community in recent decades, for a prudent and stabilising foreign policy, generally beneficial economic interactions and its anti-imperialist stance.

Anteria’s only Singularist state, the Principate of Vultesia is divided into eighty prefectures, plus an additional seventeen metropolitan prefectures and thee so-called special prefectures; as well as the Special Administrative District of Layfet, referred to as the Integral Prefecture of Læfett by the Vultesians. Amongst the most homogeneous nations on the planet -in no small part due to state policy- the population is overwhelmingly ethnic Vultesian, however small diasporas of Canterian, Riamese, Xzarvarians, Rohynites, Gavrilians and Wellsenfailens can be found, particularly in the nation’s larger cities - Layfet notwithstanding. Linguistic diversity is similarly minor, with few citizens able to speak a language other than Vultish. The Principate is considered a developed country with a powerful mixed/semi-planned economy that is primarily built on agriculture, heavy industry, manufacturing and a growing service sector. Vultesia is the lead and founding member of the Saltstil Pact, as well as the Pact’s subsequent subsumed organisations including the EEP, OBF and the OTC. The Principate is also a member of the AWA.

Etymology

The name Vultesia has been historically, and interchangeably applied to both the various unified Vultesian states through history, and for the plateau on which many of those states, and smaller predecessor states have existed upon.

In Vultish, Vultesza is a direct amalgamation of the name Vultes, the semi-mythologised warrior king or warlord who confederated the population of much of the classical era plateau under his rule; the second half of the name, Esza, is a word still cognate with the older Vultish 'Esztat', meaning 'land' or 'region'.
