The Estmerish League, commonly known as Estmere, is a country located in northern Euclea. Estmere is an island nation, with the Ghaillish Sea to the north, the Estmerish Channel to the west, the Gulf of Assonaire to the south, and the Vehemens Ocean to the east. Notably, Estmere shares a maritime boundary with Werania in the west, across the Estmerish Channel. The Estmerish League is a federal republic, in which each province has a substantial degree of autonomy, and a measure of direct democracy. The provinces of Estmere were once sovereign nations, ruled by various monarchs, nobles, and religious leaders, before their unification under the original Estmerish League during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Timeline:

1452- A bloody war of succession breaks out in the Kingdom of Embria after the death of King Richard V without an heir. The main claimants are William, Lord of Southgate, and Henry “the Bloody”, Duke of the Northern Marches. The war claims thousands of lives, and devastates the Embrian economy.

October 5th 1455-January 7th 1457- The Republic of Ilbane declares war on Embria, landing a mixed army of citizen-soldiers and mercenaries on the Embrian coast. First the army of Lord Southgate is destroyed at the Battle of Ravenbridge, on September 6th of 1455, and then the army of the Duke of the Northern Marches is destroyed at the Battle of Kingston, on November 8th of 1456. Both claimants to the throne are killed in combat with Ilbanish armies. The Embrian nobility is forced to bargain with the Ilbanish.

January 7th, 1457- lbane demands a portion of Embrian territory on the coast opposite Aldermouth in the Treaty of Kingston. Embria, with no army to resist, is forced to concede the land. Harold, Duke of the Western Marches, is crowned King Harold I of Embria.

1457-1472- Many of the Embrian ports choose to join Ilbane, in order to reap the trade opportunities and stable economy that the merchants of the Republic enjoy. King Harold I is incandescent at every port to secede, but is unable to rebuild the Embrian army sufficiently to crush the secessionist cities. Tensions between Embria and Ilbane grow to a fever pitch by 1472, leading to the Second Embro-Ilbanish War.

May 12th 1472- The port of Bournemouth, the largest maritime city in Embria, secedes to the Republic of Ilbane. Unable to cope any longer, King Harold I marches his army to Bournemouth and besieges the rebellious port. The Ilbanish declare war on the Kingdom of Embria for the second time.

1472-1474- The Second Embro-Ilbanish War is an unmitigated disaster for Embria. An Ilbanish army marches out from the Republic’s territories in mainland Estmere, and breaks the siege of Bournemouth. Harold I is forced to retreat to the capital of Kingston. After a year long siege, the leading citizens of Kingston decide to open the gates to the Estmerish against the wishes of the King, and Harold I is taken prisoner. For the remaining year, the Ilbanish troops mop up Embrian aristocrats reluctant to surrender.

February 22 1474- The Republic of Ilbane annexes Embria under the Treaty of Southgate, putting an end to the centuries-old kingdom. Embria is placed under the jurisdiction of the Ilbanish House of Delegates, but Embria is given the right to contribute five delegates to represent it in the House, as well as the right to a degree of autonomy and self government. Embria’s government and representation in the House of Delegates is largely undertaken by its aristocracy, until the Federalist Revolutions of 1819. This sets the precedent for the integration of other Estmerish states into the Ilbane-centered League government later in Estmerish history.

The Estmerish national government is run based on the Aldingham system, with a unicameral parliament, the Directorial Assembly, led by the Grand Director, and accompanied by the Deputy Director. The League's head of state known as the Stateholder, who has little power, relative to the Grand Director and the Directorial Assembly. The Council of Twelve is the Estmerish high court, with Councilors appointed by the Directorial Assembly to a six year term, purposefully staggered so that two Councilors are replaced every six years. Membership in the Council of Twelve is limited to one term, and a Councilor must have served as a judge in a lower court at least once prior to appointment. If the Council of Twelve is tied, the Stateholder is required to cast the deciding vote on the case.
