The FMK Koza is a family of high-mobility, all-terrain 4WD (4x4) and 6WD (6x6) military utility vehicles. The production started in 1971 in FMK (Fabryka Maszyn Katovice) and it is still being made today. The vehicles are capable of overcoming extremely difficult terrains, thanks to its well-designed suspension, relatively small weight, and good power control. FMK Koza was slightly redesigned and upgraded in 1990, following several years of testing and trials by the factory’s engineers and designers. Today, numerous of variants exist, thanks to the modularity of vehicles, which is also one of the reasons this vehicle is used by numerous militaries in the region.

Overview

First generation

FMK Koza showing its off-road capabilities

The first prototype of FMK Koza was developed in 1968 and the first tests started immediately after. After slight changes and testing of three additional prototypes, mass production started in 1971. The sales quickly sky-rocketed with over 500 pieces ordered by the Nikolian Royal Army.

The vehicle was designed to be reliable and easy to fix; It is powered by air-cooled petrol engine with dual carburetors. The engine is specially built for FMK Koza and has three oil pumps so that the engine does not get starved of oil no matter of the orientation of the vehicle.

The FMK Koza is one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made. Its maximum speed on road is 110 km/h (68 mph) and it can carry up to 14 troops based on the version. Both 4x4 and 6x6 versions can tow 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) and 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) or 1,800 kg (3,968 lb), respectively, off-road. The range of FMK Koza is 400 km (249 mi) with one tank of fuel, and up to 700 km (435 mi) with additional tanks mounted.

The design of chassis of the FMK Koza contributes to its high mobility. It has central tube chassis with a transaxle which distributes the weight more evenly, and keeps the centre of gravity as low as possible. The differentials are sealed units and require minimal lubrication. The FMK Koza also has portal axles to provide extra clearance over obstacles. The first generation vehicles are designed with numbers 504 (4x4) and 506 (6x6).

Second generation

FMK Koza 606M

Second generation of the FMK Koza was designed in 1990 and it brought numerous of changes to the vehicle. While the chassis and the general shape remained the same, updates were made to the power unit. Petrol engine was changed with Turbocharged direct injection (TDI) turbodiesel engine which brought more power to the vehicle. Thanks to the larger size of the new engine, a front mask had to be slightly redesigned to fit the engine. Transmission also saw changes as in second generation, 5-gear automatic transmission was inserted as standard feature, while manual transmission remained optional. The minor tweaks include wider track, slightly larger tyres and disc brakes. The designations of second generation models are 604 (4x4) and 606 (6x6), while variant designations remained the same.

FMK Koza capabilities

Thanks to its well-engineered suspension and body, good power system and transmission, FMK Koza is capable of overcoming the most demanding tasks, few vehicles can:

  • 45° approach and departure angles
  • 100% slope, or until tyres lose traction
  • 700 millimetres (27.6 in) fording depth
  • Can climb down a 360 millimetres (14.2 in) wall
  • 43.5° side-slope
  • 1000/1500 kg of payload (4×4/6×6)
  • 335 millimetres (13.2 in) of clearance (lowest point when fully loaded)
  • top speed (4×4): 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph); (6×6): 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph)
  • Full engine power available at 4 kilometres per hour (2 mph)
  • M body type carries 10 people (4×4), 14 people (6×6)
