Summary

Description This Ice Breaker is breaking the ice in McMurdo Bay. What looks like solid ground is only dirt on the ice. The ice here is actually 11-15 feet thick the area that looks like a box is actually the Ice Dock, it is made by building up ice layers and cable until it is thick enough to support the weight of the equipment and the heavy Conex Boxes that are unloaded from the supply ship. If you look at the larger sizes, you can see people standing on the ice dock watching as the Polar Sea is working it's way towards the dock. It is breaking the ice around the dock. At one point it actually rammed the dock putting a huge gouge in it! (they don't exactally stop on a dime!) During the Summer of 2003/2004 when I was in Antarctica, they brought both the US Polar Sea and the US Polar Star down to break the Ice Channel from open ice to McMurdo and to keep it clear. Each Summer Season at the end of the Season (Feburary/March) a cargo ship and a fuel ship arrive to resupply McMurdo. These ships leave enough supplies for the next year, After the ships leave and the last of the planes leave towards the end of March, the station is down to around 50-75 personal for the Winter Season. They are there alone until mid August when a few flights come in with a few supplies and some personnel to open up the station for the summer season. These flights will bring the population of McMurdo up to around 200 until around the first of October when the Summer starts. At this time the main body of personnel come in. This brings the population quickly up to around 1500 to 2000 individuals! At this time South Pole Station is also opened up and the crew that wintered there is able to leave and return to the states and a new crew takes their place.
