Summary

Description
English: Stone House is located in Udhagamandalam(also known as Ooty, a hill station situated at elevation 2,240 m ), Tamil Nadu , India. It was the first Bungalow in Ooty and it was constructed in 1822 by John Sullivan, a colonial administrator under East India Company, serving as collector of Coimbatore. Earlier in 1819, Sullivan with an entourage of Europeans, and Madras Sepoys made an expedition in Nilgiri Mountains crossing rough and harsh terrain, ascending steep precipices and risking danger from wild animals and reached a plateau after six days. Sullivan found the place was unusually temperate and healthy and persuaded the Madras Government to make this place as a hill resort. Sullivan purchased a piece of land from 'Todas', the original inhabitants of Nilgiris and built his first bungalow here and later many Englishmen built their houses in Ooty including Sir Thomas Munro, the Governor of Madras. Sullivan introduced horticulture in the Nilgiris. Potatoes, Barley other agricultural products introduced in Ooty. Subsequently, Ooty had been developed into a town and became government summer headquarters for the Madras Presidency. After India's Independence, Stone House was used as official residence of the principal of Government Arts college, Ooty. Stone house is a Heritage building and recently it was renovated and converted as Government Museum by the Tamil Nadu Government.
