Help:Export

Mediawiki provides the ability to mass export articles into an XML file for easy backup/transfer. This is the preferred method for moving articles from the old IIWiki to the new IIWiki. It is recommended that users become familiar with this system of exporting so that they can efficiently backup many articles or categories.

The Export Page

Exporting is done through IIWiki's Special:Export page. To access this page manually, users can navigate to Special pages by clicking the link on the left-hand navbar, and then clicking the Export pages link typically found near the bottom of the page.

When on the Export page, you will see two input boxes and three check boxes.

1-Add pages from category
2-Add pages manually
3-Include only the current revisions
4-Include templates
5-Save as file

Add pages from category

The "Add pages from category" box allows you to automatically put all the pages that belong to a certain category in your export list. The category name should be typed in the box. For example, if you want the pages from Category:Example to be put on your export list, you can type "Example" in the box and then click the Add button. The pages will then appear in the export list.

Add pages manually

The "Add pages manually" box is the list of articles that are to be exported. You can add articles manually to this list by typing in the article name on its own line. For example, if you also wanted the page Example_nation exported, you would put "Example_nation" on its own line in the list.

Namespace prefixes are required for this list if you want to export something in a namespace, such as a template. In this case, exporting Template:Example would require typing "Template:Example" on its own line in the list. Please keep in mind that IIWiki prefers users avoid exporting non-custom templates, like infoboxes.

Include only the current revision

The first checkbox under the Add pages manually box is Include only the current revision, not the full history. If this box is checked, only the current version of the articles in the list will be exported. If unchecked, then the full history will be exported alongside the current version. In most cases, this box should be checked, as the full history is almost never necessary to export.

Include templates

The next checkbox is Include templates. If checked, Mediawiki will try to include all the templates used by the pages in the export list, such as infoboxes, navboxes, and other templates. For IIWiki, this checkbox should always be unchecked, as the template version being exported may be out of date compared to the versions on IIWiki or Wikipedia.

Save as file

The final checkbox is Save as file. If checked, Mediawiki will export your article as an XML file that will be downloaded to your computer. If unchecked, then after exporting the file will open up as a webpage for you to download manually. It is highly recommended that this box is left checked, as then it will automatically prompt you to download the file.

How to export

1. Navigate to Special:Export

Special:Export is located near the bottom of Special pages.

2. Input the desired pages

This can be done in one of two ways: inputting a category name in the Add pages from category box and clicking Add, OR adding pages manually by typing them into the Add pages manually box. Remember that each page should be on its own line, and that namespace prefixes (like Template:) are required.

A combination of both can be used for especially long lists.

3. Export the pages

Make sure that Include only the current revision and Save as file are checked, and that Include templates is not checked.

Click the Export button and you will be prompted by your browser to save or open the file. You want to save the file to somewhere you can access later.
