List of largest cities in Menghe

Jump to navigation Jump to search

This list ranks the largest cities in Menghe by population. Specifically, it ranks all of Menghe's metropolitan cities (도시 / 都市, Dosi), an administrative rank given to cities with populations of over 1 million. It does not include small cities (시 / 市, Si) with populations of between 200,000 and 1,000,000, though it does include three Directly-Controlled Cities (직할시 / 直轄市, Jikhalsi) which are organized as metropolitan cities but are equal in rank to provinces. As of 2015, Menghe had 70 cities with Dosi or Jikhalsi status, but both the number above the threshold and the population in each city have risen rapidly during Menghe's National Economic Miracle.

Overview

Map showing the 70 largest cities in Menghe as of 2015. All cities marked on the map can be found in the list below.

The list below defines cities based on their administrative boundaries - in other words, by the population living within the city proper. For metropolitan cities (Dosi) in Menghe, this area generally includes the contiguous urban core plus an outer ring of suburbs and satellite towns governed by the city. Population estimates based on urban statistical area tend to be smaller, as they exclude much of this outer ring, while those based on metropolitan area may show higher populations because they include satellite towns outside the de jure city limits.

These figures also treat adjacent cities as separate entities, as long as they are administratively separate. Due to a general Menghean government practice of merging small cities into large ones as the latter grow, this problem is relatively rare, but it may affect the definition of metropolitan areas. Some unofficial estimates, for example, treat the cities of Sunju, Namtong, Dongchŏn, and Insŏng plus their surrounding satellite areas as a single metropolitan body with a population of over 50 million. More ambitious estimates have treated the "Donghae Belt" from Donggyŏng to Haeju as a megalopolis, sometimes pushing its southern boundary even further to Changjŏn. The Menghean government does not consider these estimates official, but local administrative officials have occasionally used the term "Donghae Belt" when promoting inter-city transportation infrastructure.

Population figures come from Menghe's 2015 census, but since then, internal immigration to cities has continued at a rapid pace and several cities have annexed new administrative areas from the surrounding prefectures. As such, these administrative numbers may not reflect more recent counts and estimates conducted by city governments.

Although Menghe claims the city of Altagracia as its sovereign territory, it is not counted in official census data, and does not appear on the list.
