Monarchy of the Freethinker Commonwealth

The official head of state in the Freethinker Commonwealth is His Majesty King Percival IV of the House of Svard-Navarre, the current 'Royal Family'. This role is defined by the constitution of the Commonwealth as an apolitical figurehead representing the continuation of the state and the nation. The Monarch him/herself provides the legal personification of the Commonwealth and under his/her name legislation and other actions of Government are undertaken.

Though constitutionally the Monarch has significant powers at his or her discretion, including the right to seize land in the name of the state in an emergency, the right to propose or veto a proposed or existing Edict or Act, and the right to over-rule the judgement of the High Court, these powers are very, very seldom used and such an act would be generally unthinkable in modern times.

The reigning monarch is entitled as the King (or Queen) of the Freethinkers (alternatively, King (or Queen) of the Freestians, the former being legally correct, the latter seen as more inclusive), the legitimacy of the sovereign is based upon the popular will and consent of the people. This is intepreted through analysis of the general will (that is, reacting to any expression beyond fringe groups of disatisfaction) and by the actions and will of parliament. As a general rule of history, the Monarch enjoys considerably greater popularity than the ministers that serve under them.

The monarchy is a split branch of the Midlonian House of Svard, and the respective families remain closely tied.
