The Republic of Chishima (Unji: 千島共和国; Hōranji: Chishima Kyowakoku) was Nanto's first republican government, ruling the country from 1981 to 1992. It succeeded the Kingdom of Chishima, which intermittently ruled the area from 1451 to 1981. The Republic was established on July 6, 1981, with General Kei Tokuma as the first president of a military government. Like its successor state, it claimed sovereignty over the entire Chishiman Archipelago, although it only had power over the southern half of Burmondsy and the islands of Iwashima.
