Anmar (Anmari: Annar), officially the Anmari Commonwealth (Anmari: Annarna Folksrike), is a semi-functioning sovereign state in northeast Amora, bordered by the Amoran Federation to the south. Anmar hosts an estimated population of 82.5 million, which is currently in decline. Mindor is the de jure capital, but following the extensive flooding, Dunfast is now the largest city and de facto capital.
Old Anmari first settled modern-day Anmar in the early CEs, migrating out from the Predic homeland. The polity of Anmar was first unified into a kingdom in 1100, under Godwin the Black, and from then on existed as an independent polity. Alongside the other powers of Amora, Anmar proved to be a significant player on the world stage, and during the early stages of the industrial revolution emerged as one of the worlds great powers.
During the modern epoch, Anmar was a founding member of the pan-Amoran Amoran League, and in 2021 became a founding member of its successor, the Amoran Federation. Despite the idealistic foundation, the Federation proved unable to quell anti-Amoran sentiment and answer the pressing questions of the day. Following a power struggle, the Federation fell into civil war in 2040, with Anmar and other states fighting against the central government. Anmar achieved independence in the aftermath of the civil war, but successive governments were plagued with heightened levels of domestic unrest due to early-onset symptoms of the Reckoning, such as crop failure and water shortages.
The conservative-liberal government of Darion Lindon attempted to quell the unrest with force, but inadvertently gave rise to the eco-socialist Watermelon Movement and the eco-fascist New Identity Caucus. The conflict and civil unrest between the government and these two groups greatly destabilized the country, and eventually culminated in the Anmari Revolution, which established the country as an eco-socialist republic. L.Q. Thoranin and his government made every attempt to transform the Anmari economy and society to prevent ecological catastrophe, but would ultimately fail, in part due to the war waged upon the country by an alliance of influential corponations. Since the outbreak of the war, the government has become increasingly authoritarian. Despite the government's best efforts, they were unable to prevent the Reckoning, which led to the irreversible flooding of over 30% of the country, a sharp population decrease and, in general, great instability.
Officially defined as a federal parliamentary constitutional republic, political analysts have commented that since the outbreak of the Green War, the country is instead run as an eco-socialist dominant-party state with elements of military dictatorship. The Folksmoot, the country's legislature, acts as little more than a toy parliament, with real power in the hands of Alderman L.Q. Thoranin. Since the fall of the Amoran Federation, Anmar has been considered a significant regional power in Amora, with claims to great power status.
