Angvar[a] (Angvarian: Ongvotar [ˈɒːŋˌβɒtɑːʕ] (Speaker Icon.svg listen); Nemedian: Eisenheim [ˌɔɪzɛːnˈhɔɪm̩] (Speaker Icon.svg listen)), officially the Imperial State of the Crown of Angvar[b], is a transcontinental sovereign state comprising the whole mainland of the Cimmerian continent and most of eastern Hyboria with northern Seria as well as numerous islands in the Atlantean and Lemurian oceans and various overseas territories and dependencies. At 44,889,573 km2 (17,331,961 square miles), or three times the size of the continent itself, Angvar is the largest country in the world by area, encircling one-sixth of Earth's inhabitable landmass and extending across twelve time zones. Bounded to the north by the Borelian Sea, to the south by the Obrisian Sea, to the west by the Maulland Sea and to the east by the Kippon Sea, it borders Drakonia and Ostenia to the west; Sylvania and Avernia to the southwest; Obrisia, Berbania, Ishavan and the Zandish Raj to the south; and Seria to the east, while sharing maritime boundaries with the North Sea Realm and Kippon to the far east, respectively. Via its overseas territories, it borders the Anxi-Fuzhi Union, Kongli, Kaozhi, Lianjian and Zhengxiang by way of the International Legation Zones along the eastern coast of Seria; Baqet, Lozi-Vulu, Kikuvu and the Hazirid Boqorate in Maurica; and Zankorra Berria, Pregonia and New Tilgard in Upper Merunia. The country consists of a total of one hundred and sixty-nine governorates (or gaue): one hundred thirty-four on the mainland and thirty-five being overseas. The westernmost and easternmost governorates on the mainland are Neuweißeheldenburg and Vladivoyna, respectively, while the northernmost point overall is in the unincorporated external territory of Neu-Cronqvist Land in Borelia and the southernmost being Los Island in the Auralian Ocean. In addition, there are three associated and protected states, namely the Infernian viceroyalty of Gaietia in Auralia[c], the Grand Duchy of Totenheim and the Duchy of Neugründen[d]. Angvar is the second-largest country in the world in terms of population, with a population exceeding 1.15 billion people, 40.81% of which are Angvarians by ethnicity. Mordegard is the country's capital and largest city as well as a worldwide cultural and economic centre, harboring a metropolitan area population of 220.8 residents, followed by other major cities as Sankt-Nimuesburg, Valenborg, Drestholm, Balzhed, Núrndorf, Skarbolg, Altbruck, Hexentreffen, Lestatshafen and Mordehelm.

The continent on which most of the territory of mainland Angvar is situated has been inhabited since prehistoric times; its earliest inhabitants, known as the Wendol in classical and early medieval texts, flourished approximately 36,900 years ago before the Ungolic peoples migrated from northeastern Seria to the Hyborian part of the continent called Cisudelia. The Iron Horde, a confederacy composed of predominantly-Ungolic clans that gave Angvar its name, formed and displaced the Wendol in a series of conquests before settling in the fertile basin of the Iral River in the Great Cisudelian Plains, giving rise to petty chiefdoms between circa 8100 and 3300 BCE. The region was known to the ancient Hyborians at that time as an important centre of a unique and diverse culture that may have even survived the decline of ancient Hyborian civilization by the early Neolithic period. It was also attested by Archaic Argosians that settled and developed trading colonies along its Obrisian coastline during the 8th–5th centuries BCE. Subsequently, the Solean Empire conquered and annexed parts of the area by the 2nd century BCE, thus ensuing the acculturation of the population and the relegation of the Iron Horde into the hinterlands after its defeat in 33 BCE. The weakening of Aurean imperial military authority enabled the migration of non-Solean peoples into the region and the establishment of a breakaway kingdom known as Talvania in 338 CE. Having scarcely endured the onset of the Wendol incursions into Hyboria in the mid-to-late century CE, the Ungols emerged as a recognizable group in Cimmeria and in Eastern Hyboria once again as they were tens of thousands of years ago, but infighting between chieftains following the destruction and fall of Talvania brought the re-unified Iron Horde to disintegration into warring chiefdoms once again until the Iron Horde ceased to exist as a polity in 526 CE.

By the 7th century CE, various kingdoms, succeeding and/or displacing earlier chiefdoms, emerged on the region. Keanuism was introduced in the 8th century CE, with the conversion of the Ungol kings under the auspices of the Solean Catheric and Heterodox churches. The foundation of the Angvarian state was laid in 969 CE, when a hitherto politically-insignificant group called the Grimhildings, led by the eponymous semi-legendary witch-queen Grimhilde, established the Duchy of Angvar following the subjugation and imminent consolidation of the neighboring clans in the Lower Iral Basin.
