The Viras Freedom Day Parade is an annual military and civilian parade held annually in Viras on August 17, commemorating the national holiday of Freedom Day. The day marks the annual anniversary of the fall of Prime Minister August Lepins' authoritarian rule through military coup, and the beginning of the Federal Republic. The parade proceeds from Vautour Road through Petit Square, where the President, their guests, the Mayor of Viras, legislative officials, and military leadership preside. Foreign dignitaries and heads of state may also be present at the parade as well.
The event is both widely attended and heavily viewed on television and online. The popularity of the military parade has also extended worldwide, to the point where foreign troops may also take part in the parade at the invitation of the President.
History
The head of the interim military government, General Jacob Strasser, ordered the day of the military coup to be designated as "Freedom Day", a national holiday to remember the downfall of the previously dictatorial regime. After the current constitutional charter was instituted, the first president, Bernard Petit, wanted a display of military strength to affirm the newly founded federal republic.
The first Freedom Day parade was held on August 17th, 1942.
