The DMS-112 (Formal designation: 112식 대물 소총 / 一一二式對物小銃, Irii-sik daemul sochong, "Type 112 anti-materiel rifle;" Short designation 112식, Irii-sik, "Type 112") is a gas-operated semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle developed in Menghe to replace the bolt-action DMS-98. It fires the 12.7×108mm heavy machine gun cartridge, and can use incendiary, explosive, or high-grade accurized ammunition.

Though sometimes referred to as a sniper rifle, the DMS-112 was primarily designed as an anti-materiel weapon. With its non-optimized 12.7×108mm cartridge, it is less accurate than the JGS-109 with high-grade 8.58mm ammunition, though still offering a much greater effective range than standard rifle-caliber rounds. It remains accurate enough to engage light vehicles, generators, fuel and ammunition stores, and small boats at distances out to 2,000 meters, and can deliver a more destructive round with a semi-automatic rate of fire. In the anti-personnel role it remains highly destructive if less precise than its alternatives.

Development

In 1998, the Menghean Army adopted the bolt-action DMS-98 as its standard anti-materiel rifle. This bullpup-configured weapon fired a 12.7×108mm cartridge from a 5-round magazine behind the pistol grip, and was generally well-regarded among its users. Nevertheless, as time passed, it increasingly showed room for improvement.

In 2010, the MoND issued a requirement for a new anti-materiel rifle to replace the DMS-98. Requirements included a semi-automatic action, a more durable barrel assembly, and a rail on the upper receiver for mounting a variety of optics (the MARS rail, designated Type 111 in Menghe, was adopted the following year). The Insŏng New Arsenal submitted a bullpup weapon, and Daechun, the recently-established producer of the JGS-109, submitted a bolt-action weapon in the hopes of winning outside the requirements. In the end, the contract was awarded to the Hwasŏng State Arsenal, the Army's in-house developer.

Design

The DMS-112 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic weapon, with a gas port on the upper side of the barrel about 1/3 of the way from the muzzle. It fires from a 10-round, double-stack magazine, compared to a five-round magazine on the DMS-98. This allows the user to deliver a series of rounds down range in relatively rapid succession, useful when engaging area targets or when engaging large targets with incendiary ammunition.

The receiver consists of two stamped, or rather bent, halves, as well as a separate attachment for the magazine well. To improve accuracy and retain zero between disassemblies, the barrel is attached to the upper receiver, and the lower receiver drops out in disassembly. The two halves are connected by retaining pins. A MARS rail runs along the top of the upper receiver; this can be used to mount optics, laser sights, and a wire carrying handle, which folds to the side when not in use. Typically, the optic used is a 3-12x scope with a 40mm lens, though 5-25x scopes have also been seen. As on the JGS-109, both scope types can mount lens glare shaders and infrared image enhancers.

The barrel is 900 millimeters long and fluted before and after the gas block. It has a large, arrow-shaped muzzle brake with three rectangular holes on either side. The chamber is chrome-plated for greater wear resistance. As on the DMS-98, the barrel is floating, with a direct connection to the receiver but no connection to the handguard or bipod, both of which mount directly to the receiver body.

Menghean sources claim that the DMS-112 has an accuracy of 2.5 MOA with standard 12.7×108mm ammunition, and 1.5 MOA with "accurized" ammunition milled for more consistent aerodynamics. Claimed range is 2,000 meters for a point target, and up to 4,000 meters for a large target or area target.
