Rintalinna is a city located in the province of Suojamaa in central Valkea. It has a population of 444,205 within the municipality and 502,386 in the urban area, making it the fifth largest city in Valkea and the fourth largest urban area in the country. Rintalinna is located on the Bay of Valkea and serves as the seat of Suojamaa.
The history of Rintalinna began with the construction of a fort in the area of Kahtarinnat in the 11th century. A settlement grew around the fort which grew into a trading city throughout the Medieval era. The discovery of coal in the 18th century and the Industrial Revolution accelerated Rintalinna's growth and urbanization, turning the city into one of the country's most important manufacturing hubs, especially in the iron and steel industry. With the decline of mining and heavy industries in the 1970s, Rintalinna refocused its energies towards healthcare, education, and scientific output.
Rintalinna is a center for business, culture and industry. The city is home to some of Valkea's most prestigious educational institutions such as the University of Rintalinna, the Suojamaa University of Technology, and the Erno Lehtonen University of Engineering. Many companies such as Sorsa, Lehtonen, Rintalinna Heavy Industries, Valkean Electric, and Valkean Aerospace have headquarters or regional offices in Rintalinna.
