Zelda Zephyr Claret (born 1991 January 4) is a Valleysian politician, political theorist, journalist, and semi-retired footballer. They (Claret is genderless) are considered one of the key leaders of the Free Lands Revolution, the socialist movement that created the current state of United Valleys.
Before their ascension to high political office, Claret was already an internationally-known soccer player, with a reputation for aggression on the field and being an outspoken "soundbite machine." Their time off the field was largely devoted to political writings, especially after the imprisonment and disappearance of their mother (a former member of the terrorist group known as The Sunshine Children) in 2011. Claret wrote under their own name and also more provocatively under the pseudonym "Cordwainer Spinster," a fact revealed in early 2026. Under the Cordwainer name, Claret developed The Theory of Historical Time, a ruthlessly active form of socialist practice, which demands constant engagement from all "conscious workers." After the conclusion of the revolution, Claret traveled to Posadastan with a small delegation, and personally took over the process of forming a new international communist organization, penning the constitution of the International Communist Network on 2026 October 31. Claret also drafted most of the Constitution of United Valleys, which was ratified in 2027 April after a failed coup and assassination attempt against them on March 14.
Claret's time in office has been marked with constant activity, traveling to multiple countries in the final months of 2026 to establish diplomatic ties, and supervising the foundation of United Valleys' new "Central System" of executive resource management and distribution. The first half of 2027 has seen Claret standing victorious over their rivals in the anarchist-dominated International Industrial Union, a former allied organization that placed itself in opposition to the communist Red Triangle Caucus of Claret and The Matriarch. Although Claret is known for boorishness and confrontation domestically, internationally, Claret is more of a dove, preferring soft diplomacy.
