First introduced in 2049 as an improvement to the older {{wpl|16-inch/50-caliber Mark 7 gun|BL 40.6 cm/50-calibre gun}}, they were installed onboard the {{sclass-|Albemarle|battleship|1}}s as well as the [[New Generation Fast Battleships]].

They would later be used on the {{sclass-|Flufferwealth|battleship|1}}s, owned by the [[Royal Memesterian People's Navy]].
== Design ==
=== Gun ===
At the orders of the reinstated Royal Illuverendian Navy in 2047, Project S-51 commenced, ordering the production of new Illuverendian heavy battleships that would succeed the [[Stratocratic Illuverendia|Stratocracy]]'s S-50 battleships. Project S-51 also mandated the creation of a new {{cvt|406|mm|in}} naval gun, as the previous ones were antiquated, and were seen as a symbol of naval power of the Stratocracy. As the keels of the ''Albemarle'' class of battleships were laid down a month after the coronation of [[Alyssa of Illuverendia|Alyssa]], so began the designing process of the new gun, designated N-MB/c406.

The first gun prototype was delivered a year later, and underwent rigorous testing stages, and proved to be satisfactory. At the same time the prototype was unveiled, the [[New Generation Fast Battleships]] project came into force, and the design teams, impressed by the gun's performance, also selected the gun to be the main batteries of their ships.

All shipboard mountings of the Mk I gun used an improved mounting from its predecessor. It was designated as the Mk I mount (''Drh LC/47''<ref group=Note>''Drh L - Drehscheiben Lafette'' ({{literal translation|turntable mounting}}. Typical term used for Illuverendian turret mounts); ''C – Construktionsjahr'' (year of design)</ref>), with an elevation of -2° to +25°, moving at 12 degrees per second. The Mk I mount was reused later for the larger [[BL 46 cm/48 calibre Mk VI gun]].

== Description ==
The 40.6 cm/52 gun is an improved, longer-barrel version of the previous Illuverendian {{wpl|16-inch/50-caliber Mark 7 gun|40.6 cm/50-calibre}} naval gun. Like its predecessor, the Mk I gun is a {{wpl|Built-up gun|built-up gun}}. A number of its components are {{wpl|Autofrettage|autofretted}}. Typical of Illuverendian naval guns, the bore is {{wpl|Chrome plating|chromium plated}}, and sports the standard {{wpl|Welin breech block|Sigmeyer breech block}}.
