The politics of Valkea take place within the framework of a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic. It consists of an executive branch, legislative branch, and judiciary branch. The Constitution of Valkea provides for the separation of powers between the three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial.

Executive power is exercised in the office of the President, who serves as head of state and the supreme commander of the Valkean Armed Forces, as well as in the executive cabinet, the Valkean Government. The Government is comprised of the Prime Minister and the cabinet ministers, who are appointed by the President and confirmed by the legislature.

Legislative power is vested in the Parliament of Valkea, a unicameral body elected within a multi-party system. Their powers include voting on laws proposed by the cabinet, amending the constitution and ordinary laws, dismiss the executive cabinet, and override presidential vetoes.

Judiciary powers lie in the Valkean judiciary, which is independent of the executive and legislative branches of government. It consists of two judiciary sub-branches: the civil courts, which have jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases; and administrative courts, which have jurisdiction over administrative cases. The Supreme Court and the Supreme Administrative Court serve as the highest courts for each respective branch.

Valkeans enjoy a wide range of civil and political freedoms. Suffrage is universal for citizens 18 years of age and above. Historically, Valkea was one of the first nations in Astyria to grant women the right to vote and to run for public office.

Parliament

The Parliament of Valkea (Valkean: Valkean eduskunta) is the supreme legislative body in the country. It is comprised of 250 members who are elected every two years. The Parliament has the power to amend the Constitution, force the resignation of the Government, and override presidential vetoes. Legislation is initiated by the cabinet or any member of Parliament, which can then choose whether to pass or dismiss the bill. Once the Parliament has passed the bill, it is then sent to the President for final approval. Should the President veto a bill, the Parliament may choose to override it through a two-thirds vote.
