North Kalimantan, officially the Sultanate of North Borneo, is a country in Southeast Asia situated on the northern portion of the island of Borneo. To the south, it is bordered by Indonesia, with whom it shares the island, while otherwise surrounded by the South China Sea to the north, east, and west, separating it from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaya.
Founded in 1961 by the Treaty of North Kalimantan which combined the British protectorate of Brunei and the crown colonies of Sarawak and North Borneo, North Kalimantan, as envisioned by its "founding father", namely Bruneian politician A. M. Azahari, became a unitary state and a constitutional monarchy with the Sultan of Brunei as its ceremonial figurehead. Since then, despite a firm majority of its population being of the Islamic faith, the country is known for its diverse ethnic makeup with Bornean natives making up a plurality of the population, followed by the Malays, the second-largest ethnic group, and the Chinese, the third-largest ethnic group. Inspired largely by their former British overlords, the country operates under a Westminster system, consisting of a bicameral parliament and an elected prime minister, while also utilising common law as its legal system.
Since its independence, North Kalimantan has been a member of various international organisations including United Nations, ASEAN, OIC, Non-Aligned Movement, and the Commonwealth of Nations.
