Kristreyri is the capital and largest city of both Kristreyri Governorate and the Commonwealth of Sodor, with a population of around 5.982 million, and its metropolitan area is the largest in Southern Ardentia, with a population of 14.98 million. It stands on the River Kala in north-eastern Sodor at the head of a 250 km estuary down to the Baħar tal-Lvant and has been a major settlement for nearly two millennia. Kristreyri Free City, its ancient core and financial centre, was founded in colonial times as Kristarey and retains its medieval boundaries. The City of Eyri, to the west of the Free City, has for centuries hosted the national government and parliament. In the 19th century, Kristreyri grew rapidly, becoming the world's largest city at the time, as it expanded and absorbed the surrounding governorate of Kalanye, and parts of Mittelland and Eysi. In 1965 it was combined with parts of Eysi and Mellandt to create the administrative area of Greater Kristreyri, which is governed by 18 local authorities and the Greater Kristreyri Authority.
