The Valleysian Attornition Industry is one of several recognized Industrial Concerns, a term for specific "industries" categorized by the Industrial Convention, United Valleys' general union.[1] The Attornition Industry is the home of attorneys, legal fileers, legal librarians, union auditors, law students sharpening pencils, bar office and courtroom custodians, and desk clerics. As the Convention sorts workers by industry rather than trade or occupation, anyone who primarily works in a law office or courthouse would fall under the category of Attornition, regardless of bar status.

Services

Attorneys in United Valleys command significant authority and respect, and represent one of the few largely unchanged processes of Valleysian governance in the aftermath of the 2026 Free Lands Revolution. The Low Code system of civil law and the posse and appeal processes were judged by the revolutionary authorities (with vocal encouragement from the public) to be socialist in character enough to allow the process to continue with modifications, most notably the addition of the Justice Commission, and independent legal research body that examines outcomes and conditions of the legal system, as well as the addition of a new labor-focused Labor Court.

The new organs of the court have caused membership of the Attornition Industry to experience steady growth, with many smart young Valleysians attempting to enter the (newly) difficult Labor Law courses at top universities, hoping to assist in the defense or prosecution of a critical labor case in the young socialist country's future. There is also a positive feeling toward the government within the industry at large, particularly among legal fileers and legal librarians, who went from working long hours for a veggie dog and a train ticket to now making a comfortable stipend alongside the elite hotshot attorneys on their firm's brochure. The attorneys themselves also aren't particularly in opposition to the government despite a change in compensation policy, as the austere and meek Valleysian judicial character never resulted in the inflated incomes seen with other countries' law professionals. Valleysian attorneys experienced dire conditions during the civil strife of 2008-2026, as the former regime began to neglect the entire concept of legal procedure, eventually engaging in a death spiral of extra-judicial killings. Despite the stability and pay rise offered by the new regime, attorneys will still often find themselves as nothing more than middlewomen in many cases they're involved in. As a result, young attorneys are known for bad attitudes and sensitive egos, while older attorneys, and Chief Attorneys, are typically seen as cooler-headed, and more likely to converse with industry fellows generally rather than attempting to be mentored or coached by fellow attorneys.

Notes

1.^ As a general union, all individual members have a say and vote in affairs and a chance at office. The Industrial Concern system labels specific, semi-closed areas of production for ease of sorting and communication, as well as to aid education and coordination between differing forms of occupation and labor, and to establish defined goals for industrial projects.
