The Vengeance-class is the newest fleet carrier design of the Commonwealth Navy. It is replacing the older and smaller Icarus-class fleet carrier, which has served since the mid-70s. They are some of the largest and most powerful conventional-powered aircraft carriers in the world.
The Vengeance is known for its idiosyncratic propulsion scheme, being one of the first Arthuristan surface warships incorporating steam power to be laid down in decades. Admiralty planners initially intended a design which would incorporate the latest in emergent technology, including integrated electric propulsion and EMALS catapults. Given their costs and unknown viability, a far more conservative solution, involving the use of a combined diesel and gas propulsion scheme, as well as a pair of auxiliary boilers to power the catapults, was proposed. Finally, it was decided to drop the diesel engines, and integrate the steam plant directly into the ship's propulsion scheme with the addition of steam turbines. Nevertheless, compared to traditional steam ships, the Vengeance features certain innovations. For example, waste heat from the gas turbines are recycled through heat exchangers in order to increase overall energy efficiency. IEP and EMALS catapults may be incorporated in a future upgrade.
Vessels of the class are projected to have service lives of up to 50 years and were engineered to be capable of integrating new upgrades in a straightforward fashion throughout the period.
