The General People's Party is a conservative political party in Landolagoj. The party was founded in 1882 as a national syndicalist political party. Between 1905 and 1950 it was the ruling party in Landolagoj.

History

The Party came to power after the Coup d'état in 1905 supported by the National Police and right-wing miltias. In the 1906 election the La Generala was the only legal party and other political parties were banned.

In the 1940s, moderate members begin to oppose the party's authoritarian and far-right course. In the beginning, the traditional party leadership fiercely opposes a more moderate party course. After the party's significant losses in the 1946 elections and the spectacular rise of the social democrats, the party is forced to take a slightly more moderate course. After the 1946 elections, the party remains in power.

The 1950 elections are seen as a major change in Landolagoj's political history. The GPP loses its majority and gains exactly as many votes and seats as the Social Democrats. Traditional members of the GPP try to prevent the opposition from coming to power, but the moderates are willing to cooperate with the opposition. In 1951 this led to a split in the party. Moderate members split off and found the Union of Independents. The moderate members support the opposition in forming a government. Ultimately, the social democrats, liberals and moderates form a government and the party comes into opposition for the first time since 1906.
