The 2019 Green Party leadership election was held on the 30th of May 2019, after Niamh Cooper was forced to resign after the Green Party's lacklustre results in state and local elections. Deputy leader Clas Markussen was elected unopposed. Originally scheduled to be held in July, the campaign was interrupted after a snap election was called for that June. At an extraordinary federal convention called to approve the Party's manifesto for the election on the 30th of May, delegates voted to suspend the rules of the leadership election and invest Markussen as leader by acclamation, after an agreement was made with party backbenchers that Markussen would lead the party for the duration of the election campaign and would step down after. This, however, never occured, as the Greens unexpectedly won the election, and formed a government with Markussen as leader.
