The 2018 Vionna-Frankenlischian General Election was held on the 22nd of July 2018 to elect 825 members to the House of Commons and to decide the proportional division of members of Registered Peers in the House of Nobles. It was a routine election under the Fixed Elections Act of 1901 and elected representatives from 11 established parties along with 20 independant candidates. Concurrently, an election was held to the Wolfswood Imperial Reichsrat.
Overview
The risk of a hung parliament was once again avoided by a coalition between the Imperial and Conservative parties to allow for a majority government. The Conservatives winning the election overall with a minority hold.
Dochlov Zimmermann retained office for a second term, supported by Arthur Astron who remained leader of the Imperial Party. Both the Imperials and the Conservatives lost a number of seats during the election but not enough to lose their joint majority.
The Labour Party under the leadership of Thomas Howe made great bounds into former Imperial and Conservative holdings and took three seats away from the far-right National Front. The aggressive leadership of Howe combined with a reactive and competent campaigning team showed a great deal of success as they claimed an additional 32 seats throughout the election.
Smaller parties such as the far-right Frankenlisch First, Vionnan National Party and the National Front managed to hold their place in Vionna-Frankenlischian politics, retaining a combined 24 seats. The Worker's Socialist Party lost their largest base of support in Ravenstern to the Labour Party, leaving them with 7 seats, the loss was remarkable with the party ceeding over a million votes in the Brumley area and retaining their other seats only marginally. Likewise, the centre-right leaning Federal Party retained all 8 of their seats from the last election and their support continued to rise of the colonies.
The Federal Party of Joshua Wood claimed a good result, carrying 3.5% of the turnout. Despite this result, which totalled double their previous vote share, they only gained the constituency of Fredericksburgh Pierside. This constituency was taken from the Colonial Union Party, fresh from the tragic death of their leader, Sir George Campdown. The Colonial Unionists retained 3.8% of the vote but lost two seats regardless. Polling immediately before the Great Electoral Decree of 2019 suggested that these parties were likely to lose at least half of their seats in the event of an election.
20 Seats were taken by independent candidates, mostly in smaller constituencies. Their political and economic positions were all radically different.
The Democratic Liberal Party saw its best result in thirty years, claiming 44 seats and continuing under the bold leadership of Roger de'Mowbare. The result made them the fourth biggest party in Vionna-Frankenlischian politics.
