The Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) is the Federation's principal federal law enforcement agency, and also serves as the nation's domestic intelligence and security service. The organization operates under the jurisdiction of the Federal Department of Justice, and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. The FIB serves as one of the Federation's leading counter-terrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal investigative bodies, and is tasked with prosecuting violations of federal law with complete impartiality.

The FIB is the Federation's largest domestic agency, with 48 field offices in major cities and more than 300 resident agencies in smaller cities and areas across the country. At an FIB field office, the senior-level officer concurrently serves as the representative of the Director of National Intelligence. Unlike the Federal Intelligence Service, which is focused on information collection abroad, the majority of the FIB's scope of authority lies domestically.

Though a domestic agency, the FIB maintains a notable international presence-- maintaining 22 Legal Attache (LEGAT) offices in Asterian embassies and consulates across the world. These foreign offices exist mainly to coordinate with foreign security services and seldom conduct unilateral operations in host countries. The FIB does at times carry out covert missions internationally - often to recover Asterian fugatives overseas - but these operations require the consent of the host government. For fugitive-related operations in countries that won't sanction an FIB arrest, the Department of Defense usually takes over.

The FIB was established in 1924, and its headquarters is located at the Adrian Winter Building, in Merrick, Milton.

Budget, mission, and priorities

In the fiscal year 2018, the FIB's budget was $10.2 billion.

The Federal Investigation Bureau's primary mission goals are to protect and defend the Federation, enforce the nation's criminal laws, and to provide leadership and support services to federal, state, provincial, and municipal law enforcement agencies. The FIB is also partnered with investigative services in JDF nations, as per the organization's information sharing agreements.

Currently, the FIB has ten top priorities:

  • 1) Protect the Federation from terrorist attacks.
  • 2) Protect the Federation against foreign intelligence operations and espionage.
  • 3) Protect the Federation against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes.
  • 4) Combat public corruption at all levels of government.
  • 5) Protect civil rights.
  • 6) Combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises.
  • 7) Combat major white-collar crime.
  • 8) Combat significant violent crime.
  • 9) Support federal, state, provincial, local, and international partners.
  • 10) Upgrade technologies to improve the FIB's ability to carry out the missions listed above.
