The Crown Colony of King Edward's Land and the Glacian Dependencies , commonly known as King Edward's Land, was the sector of Glacia claimed by Estmere. The claim comprised the region between longitudes 0° and 108°E, and south of 60°S latitude. The claim extended toward the South Pole.
The area was made Crown colony in 1909 via letters patent, but the first state-backed expedition took place in 1903, under the command of Ralle Barner and James Harwood, following the exploits of Anders Søren Hammar. This expedition was successful at charting the coast and some of the inland, despite Barner's death, and Harwood was named first High Commissioner of the colony. Due to the state of the colony, this position eventually came to be associated with a fall from grace in Estmerish politics. Plans were made for a semi-permanent, research-focused capital settlement at Jamestown, but these plans were pushed back due to the Great Collapse in 1913, and eventually postponed indefinitely due to the outbreak of the Great War in 1927.
Work on Jamestown did begin in 1935, under John Darcy, but in the same year the Crown colony was disestablished, with control of the territory transferred to the International Condominium of Glacia, and the region became part of the International Territory of Glacia.
In the modern day, the territory is still known by this moniker. With no native population, it was and is primarily inhabited by the staff of research and support stations. Despite the transfer of territory, King Edward's Land and Jamestown in particular remains home to primarily-Estmerish research staff.
Name
The colony was named in the honour of Edward V, who reigned as King of Estmere and the Lands Beyond the Sea from 1887 until 1916. Edward personally funded the first expedition of Ralle Barner and James Harwood in 1903, envisioning that the uninhabited continent could provide a naval base for the Estmerish Navy and function as a penal colony.
