The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR, Russian SFSR), often shortened as "Russia" or "Russian Federation" is a constituent member of the Soviet Union as its largest and most populous republic. By area, it is the world's largest first-level administrative division by area and the most populated, with an area of over 17 million square kilometers and a population of 186.054 million recorded in the 2022 census.

The country's most ethnically diverse republic, Russia is home to over 193 different ethnic groups, the largest of which are Russians. The republic is home to many Turkic groups as well which make up around 9% of Russia's total population.

Formerly a sovereign state and the first constitutionally socialist nation as the Russian Soviet Republic (later Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic) from 1917 until 1922, Russia was one of the founding members of the Soviet Union alongside Byelorussia, Ukraine, and Transcaucasia. From its territory would also emerge the union republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizia and Turkmenia, as well as the short lived Karelo-Finnish SSR. Russia saw intense fighting during the Second World War, seeing nearly 14 million people die during the Nazi invasion. After the war, Crimea was handed over to Ukraine. Russia currently sits, de-facto, as the "leader of the Soviet Union", due to making up most of the union's population, economy, and area. Due to this, the Soviet Union is given the common misnomer of "Russia" or "Soviet Russia"; despite Russia only being one of 14 constituent republics.
