Wabash, officially the Wabash Republic or less commonly the Republic of the Wabash, is a self-proclaimed breakaway state in the Rust Belt of North America. The Wabash Republic is currently under the "protection and guidance" of the Wabash State Police, led by Superintendent Joseph Mason and State Police Colonel Emma Russell. After President Henry Siddall failed to contain the Republic of Superior uprising and the western New York uprisings, and the subsequent deterioration of law and order in even the most core regions of the republic, the Wabash State Police launched a coup d'etat, arresting President Henry Siddall and senior members of his cabinet. After negotiating with Siddall, he was forced to accept terms that made the Wabash State Police the de facto stewards of the Wabash Republic. Failing stability and increasing crime made this action relatively welcomed by the general population in the republic, or most of the public was indifferent, as President Siddall's popularity had plummeted in the prior months. Military units in the republic were reorganized into groups subordinate to the Wabash State Police, and the military was subsequently renamed to the Wabash State Police Armed Militia (WSPAM). As such, the Wabash State Police is the highest governing organ of the republic.
Government
Despite being called a republic, Wabash appears to be a dictatorship. This is supported by the lack of elections or even the mention of such. Citizens of the Republic have to pay taxes in the form of either money or crops. Failure to do so often results in prison sentences. Individual rights are greatly curtailed, and the Wabash State Police Armed Militia frequently detains people for no reason at all, often without so much as an explanation.
Cleveland Act
Cleveland Act: The Cleveland Act is a law passed in the Wabash Republic sometime after the State Police coup d'etat. The law criminalizes the ownership of any firearms by citizens except for any active member of the State Police or the State Police Armed Militia. Passed by the Wabash Republic, it is meant to take full of control of the firearms in the areas administered by the government thereby curtailing any chance of violent rebellion. Any violation of the law is punishable by a prison sentence. Due to the Wabash Republic's ban upon civilian firearms, the State Police and the Armed Militia are the only groups authorized to carry rifles and sidearms. Therefore, the State Police is the most hierarchical and armed group operating in the Republic, although that has not stopped various groups from obtaining them, such as rebels and separatists.
Immigration/Defense Act
Article 7, Section 28 of this law allows officials of the Republic to question or even detain any person that they suspect of criminal or subversive behavior. Per the Immigration and Naturalization Defense Act, all Militia personnel are able to search, detain and question anyone who is believed to be involved in criminal or subversive behavior. Militia do however detain people for no reason at all.
