The CPSU traces its roots back to the {{wp|Russian Social Democratic Labour Party}}, itself a merger of several {{wp|Marxism|Marxist}} and {{wp|Socialism|socialist}} parties operating in the {{wp|Russian Empire}}. {{wp|Vladimir Lenin}} joined the party in 1903 and quickly divided the party between the {{wp|Bolsheviks}}, the "majority", and the {{wp|Mensheviks}}, the "minority".
