Tereza Darvas (born 6 May 1983) is the 16th and current Premier of Ardalia since 10 January 2020. She has been a member of the National Assembly since 2010. Darvas previously served as Ardor Raszan's Deputy Premier during his Second Premiership.
Early Life
Tereza was born on 6 May 1983 in Hran, as an only child to Ervin and Rosza Darvas. Her father was a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hran while her mother was a surgeon at a local hospital. They were also both former members of a resistance cell that help bring about the fall of Frelno Letzek's regime. From birth, they both knew that she was destined for greatness and spared no expense in her education. She would attended Porva College and graduate at the top of her class in 2001. With the encouragement of her parents, she went on to get a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Hran.
As she was got deeper and deeper into her doctorate, her political ideology became clearer. Though the Socialists had managed to erase some of the economic and social damage they had caused Ardalia during their Governments during the 1990's, Ardalia needed to be bolder - fulfilling not only the overaching vision laid out by New Left Premier Miria Seranoda - but even embrace some other more extreme policies from neighboring states - within an Ardalian-Caropsyne framework in order to truly create an equal society for all. Her thesis spoke on this and argued that a true social democracy had been called for in the 1910 Constitution.
Her parents also played a role in influencing her political leanings. Neither of them had never been explict about their political affilation. They divulged their life-long and long-time secret socialist affilation. She was at first angry they had hid it from her but her father explained to her that if they had ever been discovered, they would have likely been arrested in the middle of the night by Letzek's secret police and possibly killed in a dense wood. Both parents would spend considerable time with her explaining their roles in the resistance. Tereza successfully defended her dissertation on how socialist policies were in alignment with Ardalian democracy in 2008.
Political Career
First Steps (2008-2010)
Darvas' dissertation quickly attracted the attention of the leadership of both the Socialist and Moderate parties. Then-Deputy Premier Ardor Raszan met Tereza for the first time in early 2009 at a nondescript cafe near the National Assembly after he had read her entire 235-page thesis. He told her that everything she had written was true and could tell that she was part of a new generation of determined Ardalians who wanted to make a difference and move the country into a new age of peace, prosperity, and growth. In that meeting, he told her that if she ever decided to run for office at any level, the party would have her back.
She would grapple with the decision to run for over a month and was able to say no when a family emergency unfolded in May 2009: both her mother and father were close to death. Their health had been declining since 2006. Rosza was first to go, followed by Ervin two weeks later. On his deathbed, she said she couldn't run for office and told her that she needed to, he needed her to, the country needed her. In his last minutes, she pledged she would. He smiled and closed his eyes. She was alone and weeped. Her parents had done everything they could to provide their homeland with the best chance to see a bright future. She called Raszan a week later and told him that she was in.
Tereza was given the 20th slot on the Socialist Party's list. Hran had always been a left-wing stronghold as far back as the last century, but the Socialists needed to boost their turnout outside of the two largest districts. The Moderate Party feared her and threw everything at her, but nothing stuck. They made one final attempt during a pair of debates in the final stretch of the campaign however her opponent could not keep control of his tongue and uttered a statement that completely stunned her, the audiance, and the Moderate leadership. His poor choice of words would prove to be a critical blow to their chances of maintaining the Assembly as the debate clip was played over the radio and television waves. The election results gave the Socialists 62% of the vote and swept the Socialists into Government and the Moderates into opposition.
Member of the Assembly (2010-2015)
Ardor Raszan ascended to the Premiership following Leno Frikasz' retirement from politics. Having recognized Tereza's potential, he proceeded to appoint her to three high-profile select committees: Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Budget. To give a complete newcomber such responsibilities made it clear to all the other deputies in the party, the Opposition, and the Premier's Council of Ministers that he had a long-term plan for her.
Prior to the elections that would determine the Assembly starting in 2015, Darvas was appointed by the party leadership to serve on the campaign board. Her fiery oratory, sharp-tongued debates with opposition leaders, and rallies along new Socialists who had been added to the list, resulted in a tremendous outcome. Not only did the Socialists return once more to power, but her involvement further increased their majority, giving Raszan even further flexibility to implement policies. She would be sigificantly rewarded for her efforts.
