The father, in order to commission a worthy burial for his children, spent a fortune resulting in the family being soon hit by a financial crisis and being full of debts. At the age of only three, his mother died of typhus and the minor sibling died right in her womb, further afflicting the already depressed father who for months did not want to work due to the pain. Given the monetary deficiencies, Zenio was unable to go to kindergarten and therefore spent his early childhood playing and snooping around the low-order streets of northern [[Pronia]], sometimes gathering in the square to listen to the stories of wayfarers or old people. Meanwhile, in order to help their father, the three older sisters had turned to prostitution in nearby [[Axiomia]] using the excuse of working as maids, and would send amounts of money home every month. Adolescence
The Periclon family would eventually achieve some sort of economic stability, so little Zenio quietly began normal school but, when he turned thirteen, his eldest sister Kramzia committed patricide following a brutal quarrel with their father regarding Zenio's future. Eventually the sister was arrested and convicted, and little Zenio moved in with the other sisters in Axiomia and lived with them in a small sub-leased attic. To pay off the accumulated debts, the two sisters forced their younger brother to work as a prostitute slave in a men's brothel, living his entire adolescence between bordellos and taverns of the lowest order. During the years spent as a prostitute, Zenio suffered numerous psycho-physical abuses and even rapes, however, despite his traumatic life condition, the young boy was still driven by an irrepressible desire to know: during his free time, in fact, Zenio tended to explore the city of Axiomia alone without the knowledge of the sisters and discover the wonders that were hidden there. He also passionately cultivated a multitude of hobbies, including writing and amateur navigation. Zenio delighted in impersonating sailors and often went to the port of Axiomia to observe the ships and nautical crews at work, sometimes circumnavigating the island of Axiomia with his humble canoe. This innate curiosity of his would eventually lead him, thanks to fate, to meet the well-known explorer Ahndo Scatevrio at a tavern. The latter, struck by the tenacity of the boy who persevered despite his precarious conditions, asked him if he wanted to abandon his horrible life to become a sailor on the Arcadia.
