Berghelling Erwann Berthou Airport (Midrasian: Aéroport Berghelling-Erwann Berthou) (IATA: BEB, ICAO: AMBA) is a major international airport serving Vaellenia and western Midrasia. The airport's origins can be traced back to the Great War when the Midrasian Armed Forces created an airfield on the site to serve the Avadin Front. The airport is located within Greater Berghelling, west of the city itself. The airport is the hub for Midrasian airlines MYD Air and Moineau. Since 1985 the airport has been named after former Midrasian Consul Erwann Berthou who was the first Consul from Vaellenia and the first Social Democrat to serve two consecutive terms.

The airport is one of Asuras largest, and the second largest within Midrasia, with commuter numbers in excess of 30 million each year. The airport underwent expansion in 1995 and has since been an integral part of the fast growing Vaellenian economy. The airport also regularly serves as a stopover location for flights connecting from Vestrim and Catai.

History

The airport's origins can be seen the Midrasian army's utilisation of the site during the latter stages of the Great War, where it was used as an airfield to store aircraft awaiting transportation to the front-lines. Aircraft would also be dispatched from the site to aid in reconnaissance missions across the Avadin mountain ranges. Following the conclusion of the war and the advancement of flight technology, the site was upgraded to become an official air force base in the 1930s as BA057. Under the military restructure of the National Coalition government however the site was closed, with all operations transferred to a newly constructed base to the north east. With the military abandoning the site, it lay disused for several years until the government chose to develop a public airport on the site in 1957.

Officially opened in 1962 as Berghelling Airport, it soon became the largest in western Midrasia and the third largest in the entire country behind Lotrič and Almiaro. Upon opening the airport generally only served flights to destinations in Asura and Arabekh. Furthermore, the airport lacked in terms of transport links. It wasn't until 1971 that the modern overground station was constructed, and its link to the Berghelling Metro would only be developed in 1995. Despite this, a number of infrastructural upgrades and expansions including the construction of a second runway; coupled with the growth of the Vaellenian economy, has seen the airport become the second largest in the country and a key hub airport in Asuran airspace. In recent years, the Vaellenian government has announced a number of new initiatives aimed at developing the airport's status as a cargo terminal whilst also improving transport services between the airport and the wider region.

Facilities

Berghelling Airport has a capacity for up to 50 million passengers annually. The airport has three terminals which are dedicated to Asuran, international and domestic flights respectively. All terminals serve a number of scheduled and chartered operations from a number of airlines, most notably MYD Air, Moineau and Lhedvinsk. Most airlines taking off from terminal 1 are flights within Asura and other nearby destinations, whilst terminal 2 tends to serve long haul flights. Terminal 3 is solely dedicated to domestic fights and is by far the smallest and least used terminal within the airport. Both terminals 1 and 2 utilise travelators to aid in transportation and have a wide variety of restaurants, news outlets and duty-free shops.

The airport also contains one separate cargo terminal with 500,000 m² (5,400,000 sq ft) worth of entrepôt storage for all manner of goods. The Cargo terminal has an integrated connection with the Midrasian rail network, which is regularly used to ship goods throughout the west of the country and across the border into tir Lhaeraidd. The airport is also located close to the Berghelling factories of Midrasian aircraft manufacturer Autero.

Ground transportation

The Airport is served by a number of rapid transit facilities and also has easy access to key roadways such as the A15 highway which leads directly into the city of Berghelling. The Airport also has easy access to the A27 ring-way which circles the city itself and the A9 which provides easy access to the Lhaeraidh border to the north and access to cities such as Bordeiu and Roúk to the south. The airport is regularly served by a number of taxi companies and has a built-in bus station with regular services into the city and across the Vaellenian region.

The airport is also served by rail services with both national and underground services located close to the station. Berghelling Airport Overground station is located only a two minute walk away from the airport, providing access to both regional and high-speed Relier services. The airport has a built-in underground service which is linked with the Berghelling Metro. The airport is served by 3 stations, one for each terminal with access from each terminal's check-in area.
