Previously dormant separatist movements in the nation took advantage of the instability and seceded from the Empire, fragmenting the country further. In an attempt to preserve the nation, leadership elements of the armed forces established an emergency military government and declared the reformation of the Empire into the Greater Afthonian State (GAS). The civil war also involved neighboring countries who supported one of the myriad of factions that fought for control of the country and in some cases, took advantage of the chaos to arrange one-sided trade negotiations for weapons in exchange for the country's natural resources. The war brought upon a long period of stagnation to the country until the war concluded in 19XX with the GAS emerging victorious. Through time the emergency military government gradually returned its powers to a civilian government though the military’s long rule has had long term social and political ramifications with the lines between civilian and military authority easily blurred.
