Officers

The following table lists information about West Arcadian officer ranks. Unliked enlisted ranks, officer ranks in West Arcadia are standardized, differing in name only. Not every rank is provided for in every branch. For instance, OF-11 ranks are only provided for the Army and Navy during times of war. Since the Marine Corps is a sub-branch under Navy control, its Commandant General is a three-star officer like the other heads of sub-branches in the Navy. A similar situation exists in the Federal Police, as it was formerly a sub-branch of the Army and therefore has traditionally been headed by a three-star officer. While the Air Force used to exist under a similar situation, it was split off from the Army and allowed to appoint its own four and five-star ranks.

Traditionally in West Arcadia, five-star officers commanded the Army and Navy while all other branches were commanded by four-star ranks. Four-star ranks also commanded entire theaters of war. Three-star ranks command entire armies or fleets (or sometimes a three-star officer will command a corps or corps-equivalent), two-star ranks command divisions or portions of fleets (although sometimes a two-star officer will command a corps or corps-equivalent as well), and one-star ranks command brigades or large squadrons. In the Federal Police, the police is headed by a three-star officer, the highest officer within a province is a two-star officer, and regions within provinces are commanded by a one-star officer.

Enlisted

The following table lists information about the enlisted ranks of each branch. In contrast to officer rank insignia, enlisted rank insignia varies by branch and structure. While branches have their own structure, they are required to adhere to a rough hierarchy for the purposes of assigning seniority in multibranch operations.

West Arcadia traditionally uses technician ranks which are equal in pay and nominal authority as the equivalent combat rank, but represents a servicemember whose duties include more technical jobs as opposed to leading troops directly. The Air Force and Navy are exceptions to this structure, as very few enlisted in those branches are in combat duties and fill what would be considered a technician role in the Army or Naval Infantry. Thus, the technician ranks do not exist in the Air Force or Navy. Higher ranked NCOs fill the niche usually filled by warrant officers in other militaries.
