The Caltari Union (Mordish: Yndad Kamruig), also known as Caltarania (Mordish: Kamr), is a sovereign state located in the northern sea. An island nation entirely surrounded by bodies of water, it shares no land borders. The country spans an area of 4,534,264 square kilometres (1,750,689 square miles), and hosts a population of 89,728,129. The historical city of Cadwell acts as the national capital and seat of government, while the metropolis of Great Sheath is the largest city .

Isolated, for the most part, from the world at large, the Gilded Isles initially developed a distinctly Fohrenin character, starting in the iron age. Throughout the rise and fall of the Reman Ecumene, the isles were able to avoid conquest, though this would not continue. During the fall of the Ecumene, a number of Reman nobles fled to the isles, and beginning in the eleventh century began their first conquest of the islands. They would succeed in subduing the local Mordish princes, but remained unable to break the back of Calydia and their Lindic mercenary allies until 981, when their leading King suddenly died, the realm fell apart and the Lindic armies defected. Following this, the northern lords bowed to the Reman Lucias I, establishing the first union, the Empire of the Hundred Isles.

Such an empire would fall from grace in 1256, when Emperor Pentus IV died without a male heir. His daughter Claudia's claim was contested, and the ensuing civil war tore the realm apart, ushering in the Great Anarchy. With imperial unity shattered, the isles reverted to their previous state of warring kingdoms. This state of affairs would continue until 1512, when Edwyn the Great of the Kingdom of Dunium pressed his claim to the throne of the newly-united Kingdom of Calydia. Defeating Calydian forces at the Battle of Ogledd, he was crowned King of Calydia and, continuing the pacification of the isles, soon became sole ruler of the High Kingdom of Caltarania. The ensuing years would see relative peace among the kingdom. Rapid industrialisation and the rise of radical thinking lead to a republican revolution in 1818, and the emergence of democracy in the country.

For the remainder of the 19th century, Caltarania would remain a beacon of enlightenment and liberal thought; but nevertheless would engage in a widespread and controversial imperialist program, leading it to emerge as one of the leading great powers. Following the wars of the 20th century, the Empire found itself unable to maintain its colonial commitments, instead opting for a policy of decolonisation and isolationism. Such action led to its decline from the great power status, exit from the world stage and retreat inwards. The country 'officially' ended the policy of isolationism in 1989, and since then has re-emerged as a relevant world power, despite the negative impact of the Great Recession.

The Union is a developed country and historical great power. It is a federal senatorial constutional republic, operating a generally mixed economy, albeit with increasing levels of privatisation following the recession. The current President is independent Drystin Gwenadur, while the current Chancellor is Caradag Lloneir, who leads the ruling Radical Party and commands the support of a coalition in the Senate and the People. It is a member of the World Assembly and the Continental Alliance.
