Parameters

The parameters below are required unless marked as optional.

Name

  • name: the common name of the state
  • official_name: (optional) The official name in English. Avoid using if it leads to redundancy with name and settlement type. Use if the official name is unusual or cannot be simply deduced from the name and settlement type.
  • nickname: one or more nicknames for the state, usually separated by semicolons

Flag

  • image_flag: file name of the state flag image; example: |Flag=Flag of California.svg
    • A small border is drawn around the flag unless |flag_border=no is set (for e.g. |Name=Ohio, which is the only state with a non-rectangular flag).
  • flag_alt: (optional) alt-text for the flag image; if unspecified, the alt-text defaults to "Flag of Name"
  • flag_link: (optional) a link to an article about the state's flag; if unspecified, the link defaults to "{{wp|Flag of Name|Flag}}"

Seal

Microformat

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

If the place or venue has an "established", "founded", "opened" or similar date that is specific to the day, use {{start date}} unless the date is before 1583 CE. If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • category
  • country-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • street-address
  • url
  • vcard

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.
