The Royal family of Joseon comprises Empress Lee Dam and her close relations. The Royal Press Service publishes a list of royal family members updated with their latest status every year, and only those listed here are recognized as official royal family members. Members often support the monarch in undertaking public engagements, and pursue charitable work and interests. Members of the royal family are not prohibited from entering public office, but they are not common.
Members
The 'Royal Membership List', published by the Royal Press Service in 2033, includes all descendants of the predecessor emperor, Emperor Lee Gun, and all descendants' spouses. Members of the royal family are obliged to comply with 19 obligations, including the duty to maintain dignity and the duty to support constitutional order. Members of the royal family who violate or cause a stir may be expelled from the royal family upon the decision of the head of the family. The current head of the royal family is the former emperor, Emperor Lee Gun.

Titles
The emperor or empress's children and grandchildren (if they are children of the emperor or empress's sons) are automatically entitled to be known as prince or princess with the style His or Her Royal Highness. According to the regulations, the children of the emperor's or empress's brothers or sisters are not given the title of prince or princess. But they are treated as members of the royal family by being called Grand Gentleman or Grand Lady.
Public role
Today, the royal family no longer plays a political role, but it still plays a role as a symbol of the state and a family of nominal heads of state. The emperor or empress should attend several official government events. Events that the emperor or empress should attend include the opening of the National Assembly, the inauguration of the prime minister, and a national memorial service. Besides that, the main members of the royal family often attend the visiting events of foreign heads of state.
Funding
Major members of the royal family are paid dignity maintenance fees and a budget for maintaining the royal family from the Joseon government. This is funded from the revenues of commercial real estate owned by the Crown, and it is customary to keep the budget from tax revenues to a minimum when the shortfall is covered by the national treasury or tax revenues.
