The FCMAC M77, commonly known as the M77 in Notreceauen service, entered development in 1962 but was frequently delayed and modified during the process due to the war and subsequent occupation of Notreceau by Transnapistan. Finally approved for service in 1977, production was further delayed until 1978, with the first batch of rifles reaching Notreceauen forces in 1979.
