Mariashafen is an unincorporated community on the Radictistani island of Ailand Vakka. The settlement serves as the department seat. The population is employed primarily in the tourist trade and on local fishing boats.
Demography
The Mariashafen census-designated place has a full-time population of 2,451 persons residing in 1,240 households. The population increases substantially at the height of the summer tourist season. Median household income is R$25,716.
Economy
The largest employers are the two large island resort complexes, The Great Seas Resort and Marina and the Smirnof Plantation. There is also a fish farm within the designated limits and a sizeable number of residents work on fishing vessels.
Transport
Mariashafen as well as the entire insland is served by the nearby Julius Smirnof Airport. The passenger/vehicle ferry MS Ailandprinz makes two round trips weekly between Mariashafen and Ghorma on the Radictistani mainland. Courtesy shuttles run between the town and the various island resorts and hotels.
Media
Radio and television
Ailandfunk 594, an independent commercial radio station, has its studio and transmitter in Mariashafen from which it serves the entire island. The community is also served by relays of RBS radio and television services.
Newspapers
Two newspapers are published in Mariashafen and distributed throughout the island: a daily newspaper, the Island Star, and an alternative weekly, De Vakker.
