The Aisling Naval Service (Aisling: Seirbhís Chabhlaigh Aisling) is one of three branches of the Aisling Defense Force and is tasked with the defense of Aisling territorial waters and vessels at sea. It is the smallest and of three branches, and is designed, primarily, to provide defense against seaborne invasion of the homeland or harassment by foreign forces, as well as anti-piracy operations and humanitarian assistance during times of crisis both within Temuair and abroad.
Vessels belonging to the Naval Service are referred to as the Árthach Cabhlaigh Aisling (Aisling Naval Vessel), or ACA.
History
Naming conventions
Vessel classes are always cities or other geographic locations.
Any vessel of any class may be named in honor of a deceased prominent citizen or member of the Armed Forces.
- Amphibious Assault Ship and Amphibious Command Ship: Named for important battles in Aisling history. Example:
- Cruiser: Cruisers are named for heroic attributes. Example:
- Destroyer: Destroyers are named for birds of prey and other predatory animals
- Corvette: Corvettes are named for weather phenomena. Example:
- Coastal destroyer: Coastal destroyers are named for rivers and other bodies of water. Example:
- Patrol boat: Named for attributes associated with grace. Example:
- Fast attack craft: Named for attributes associated with dexterity. Example:
- Submarine: Submarines prior to 1996 were referred to by their hull number, (S-94, S-124). However, with the commissioning of the first Undine-class submarine, the Imperial Navy authorized submarines to receive names for the first time. Submarine names are almost always associated with death, shadows or the underworld. Example:
- Mine countermeasures vessel: These vessels are named for attributes often associated with luck. Example:
- Support Vessels such as seaplane tenders and replenishment oilers are generally named for gemstones or precious metals. Example:
- Hospital ship: These vessels are named for peaceful words or phrases. Example:
- Training ship: These vessels are named for words associated with teaching and the classroom: Example:
