Presidential campaign (2020)

After months of speculation, Powell announced his candidacy for president in October 2019. He originally said he would run as an independent, but accepted the endorsement of Ita in January and, in the same month, filed papers to run as Ita's candidate. The Vox alliance resolved to run one candidate, drawn from any of its member parties, and offered all Vox members a postal ballot to choose the party's nominee. Golding was named the party's candidate on 2 March 2020, with around 75% of the vote.

On announcing his run for the presidency, Powell said his main priority would be "fixing a broken system" and that, if elected president, he would retire from comedy. His main opponent, the incumbent Cameron Campbell, remarked he wished Powell had been elected president years ago.

Personal life

Powell met his first wife, Lena Muzio, at university. They were married in 1995 and divorced in 1998. Powell's second wife, actress and model Annabel Hunt, met Golding during his tenure on Weekly Wash. Powell and Hunt were married in 2003.

Powell and Hunt have two twin daughters, born in 2006.

Powell identifies as pansexual, and said in 2004 that he had sexual relationships with "men, women and everything in between". Both of his marriages have been to women, but Powell was reportedly in a relationship with actor James Bakker from 1999 to 2001. Powell was an early supporter of same-sex marriage rights in Skaolitunia, and ever since his university days has been a strong supporter of trans rights.,,
