The Sultanate of Federalist Unions, more commonly referred to as Federalist Unions, is a medium sized nation situated in the Middle East, bordering the Ocean on the east. It remains a regional power, with its unique religion of Zentheos allowing the nation to be a connector between East and West. Ruled happily by the Sultan and the Emirs, the people are relatively content to live as merchant traders and as a hub for the entire world. Easy access to the oceans has also led to a recent, though relatively slow, buildup of the navy.

Government and Politics

The government of Federalist Unions is mercilessly ruled by the benevolent sultan, who takes advice from the council of Emirs, consisting of 9 emirs. The council also calls ministers, with the approval of the Sultan, who serve to direct domestic policy whilst remaining accountable to the higher government. The preacher is not an elected position, but whoever fills it at the time is also allowed a say in government affairs, though that person typically fills their time in meditation, prayer, and preaching to the people.

Demographics

Ethnic Groups

The sultanate is fairly ethnically homogenous, with over 90% of the population being federalist and 96% professing a belief in Zentheos.

Religion

Zentheos is the predominant religion throughout the sultanate. Originally started as a fusion between eastern Zen and a Western pagan god Theos, the religion has become the guiding principle behind Federalist Unions. The 3 prophets who left behind the Hagios, the religion's sacred text, are also credited with founding the modern state. The religion mostly focuses on meditation and a constantly flowing mental attitude as a means of attaining true Zen and a connection with Theos. Those with a stronger connection to Theos report sometimes having their entire bodies taken control of or guidance issued into their minds, the people reporting this being labeled Hierons. Most senior military officials are Hierons, and a disproportionate number of government officials are as well.

Education

Education is highly valued in Federalist Unions, with children aged 6-12 required to attend school. After that, upper class children are allowed to continue on in military training schools until they reach 16, the age of maturity, when they are enlisted as officers in the armed forces. However, for top students in both schools and for some foreign visitors, the university of the sultan allows students to graduate with degrees in philosophy, governance, or religion. Degrees typically take 6 years to attain and graduates are presented with a sword upon conclusion of the program.

Military

The sultanate maintains a small professional military force, with only 10,000 soldiers typically employed full time. However, in recent years the navy has been given extra funding by the Sultan, allowing for the successful growth of protector vessels and eastern ports. When not protecting the border or engaging in war, soldiers typically involve themselves with infrastructure projects or assist the elderly with farming. In the case of an invasion, most male citizens would be drafted into the army and forced to fight against the enemies, with the professional soldiers serving as their guides.
